Are Canadians really getting good value from legal cannabis? An Ontario deep dive

Hey everyone,

Since legalization, we’ve all heard the headlines about record sales and new products hitting shelves across Canada. But if you actually talk to consumers, you’ll hear a different story: people are still asking whether they’re getting good value, whether labels are clear, and why quality seems to jump up and down from batch to batch.

In Ontario especially, the legal market has grown fast, but it’s still confusing for a lot of regular Canadians. Between THC percentages, terpenes, “craft” labels, and rotating strains, it’s not always easy to know what you’re actually buying or whether the extra money for “premium” is worth it. At the same time, governments keep talking about competing with the illicit market, which only really happens if legal options are both clear and fair for consumers.

That’s why a couple of us in Ontario started a small project called OntarioCanna, where we dig into legal products, explain the labels in plain language, and compare what’s on offer across the province. We’re not here to bash the legal system or to hype any one brand – the goal is simply to give Canadians more transparency so they can make smarter choices with their money.

If you’re curious about:

  • How Ontario’s legal cannabis prices and options actually look from a consumer point of view
  • Whether “high THC” really means better, and what else matters on the label
  • Which parts of the legal system seem to work well and where Canadians are still getting frustrated
…you might find this interesting:
I’d love to hear from other Canadians – whether you’re in Ontario or another province – about how the legal market feels where you are. Do you think we’re moving in the right direction, or do we still have a long way to go to make legal cannabis truly work for ordinary people?

I'm not in worst case Ontario but in BC where Govt weed is at a similar price point and equal or better quality. In both instances you get what you pay for.

I bet that there are guys out there who are growing their own in their house and that stuff is amazing...
We grow it for one of our dogs. He’s 18 or 19 years old, and he looks forward to the growing season every year. About a month from now he’s gonna start wandering around sampling all the different plants in the yard, trying to find the right ones.

Once he does, he only eats the young tender leaves to start with…& it knocks about 16 years off his age for an hour or two… and then he eats and has a big nap and repeats the process. He does that from July through the fall.

We will bring in a couple of the bigger plants for him in the fall. I just kind of rotate them a bit as he’s a short dog…& he trims the bottoms off because that’s what he could reach and they keep growing back cause they grow like weeds.

If we happen to get a couple of ounces of bud off of them or nothing at all, no big thing…because we do it for the dog.
