Jethro Tull - "The Witch's Promise" (1970)

The Blackpool folk band had a No4 UK hit with this in 1970.

The band, still going to this day, are fronted by Ian Anderson, who is also the band's flautist.

Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Anderson and his family moved down to Blackpool on the Lancashire coast when he was 11 where he later founded the band.

Partially as a result of this Anderson, now aged 78, is a staunch unionist, a supporter of the union between the four great nations.

"I'm a Brit. I see myself as a product of that union."

1970 was the year The Beatles split; Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) severed ties with Britain but her independence would not be recognised internationally until 1980; the ashes of Hitler, Braun, Goebbels and Goebbels' wife and children were scattered into the Biederitz river; the Royal Navy abolished its daily rum rations for its sailors; and Fiji gained its independence from Britain...

I've seen Jetro Tull. 1990 I think at the Orpheum in Vancouver.

I saw them late July/early August 1970 at the Coliseum they were on a double bill with Fleetwood Mac and it was considered a Big Deal that Christine McVie was on keyboards.

They always remind me of when our history teacher taught us about Jethro Tull, the guy who invented the seed drill in 1701 after whom the band is named, at high school.

Every time I think of the band I always remember that class that day.

The Pretenders - "2000 Miles" (1983)

In 1983, the British band fronted by an American woman had a big Christmas hit with this.

In 2022, Chrissie Hynde, now 74, applied for, and became, British.

The song is simply about a woman missing a man at Christmas.

Chrissie has said of the band's guitarist: "Robbie McIntosh plays beautifully on '2000 Miles.' Anything to avoid listening to my voice and my stupid words."

Saw them live in West Berlin in '84. Good show. The Waterboys opened.

The brand new single from the veteran California heavy metallers.

Vocalist Jonathan Davis often likes to wear a kilt on stage in honour of his Scottish ancestry.

The band's sound may sometimes sound like Black Sabbath. That's because the Birmingham band were a huge influence on Korn.
