Toronto police figures show that more than 50,000 bikes have been reported stolen in the city since 1997. Last year alone, 4,585 bicycles were reported stolen in Toronto. But police said the numbers don't even come close to the real figures because most people don't register their bikes — and victims seldom report the crime.

If your bike is stolen you might as well go buy a new one. Police have speeding tickets to hand out, internal investigations to cook, bribes from gang bangers to collect and donuts to eat. They don't have time for frivolous pursuits like capturing criminals.

I've never been in a position to have one stolen. And now that I am biking, I don't know if mine's nearly 'cool' enough to warrant snatching. It is an oddity though... don't see many automatic transmission bikes around.

Report it to the police along with its serial number, make, a copy of your receipt for the bike. In your case report it to your insurance company as automatics are not cheap. If you have a picture post in the local paper and pass around leaflets.
