Tax cuts? What to do with the extra funds?

So, the pundits are predicting some form of tax cuts are coming today. As our economy grows, and the price of resources rises, our government is making much more money than they are spending.

So, the question is, what to do with that money?

I'm not so sure we should jump to tax cuts. I think we should be taking advantage of this situation while we can. Perhaps more money for rural health clinics. Or perhaps paying down the debt some more. If it is tax cuts, I hope it will not be more of these focussed little tax cuts that Harper's Government seems to favour. Across the board income tax cuts would be great.

So what would you all like to see? Anything in particular?

Invest the money into renewable resources. More wind farms and solar generators. Affordable transportation across our gargantuan nation would be nice too. Honestly, I would be the most happy if they invested it in reducing the red tape and headaches the average citizen faces when they deal with anything government related.

I could be cynical and say replace red tape with a blue pair of scissors, hey I just did;)

I'd like to see more invested in renewables as well. There are transportation projects that would make a lot of sense. High speed rail between Calgary and Edmonton, I'm sure the area in southern Ontario would make good economic sense too.

Tax cuts everywhere possible, and then typical Canadians can use the savings to pay down their debt.

In case you don't notice, the more the gov't puts money into things like rural health care, the more the system gets bogged down with pointless paperwork and layers of petty beauraucrats, who do NOTHING to deliver the service.

Could someone please explain to a retard like myself, just how, and why exactly our country became indebted, and to who?

Just kinda curious is all. Thank you for your time.

No I didn't notice that, but that could be because my Aunt is a CEO of one of the Health regions here in Nova Scotia. Frequently, the professionals involved cite the need for more funding to balance the inequalities in rural/urban health care.

There's always going to be paperwork. Especially if it's addressing a problem.

Don't get the idea I'm against tax cuts, I just think there are equally important priorities. I don't think the wait time guarantees are enough, with an aging population and years of cuts.

Just so long as they don't pass "trickle effect" legislation for distribution.

This is where the savings are distributed amongst the service sector, and that is supposed to trickle effect down to the rest of us in savings. Never, and I mean never will the guy who is supposed to get it ever will using this method.

If there is any cutbacks, present it in the form of a transaction such has a year end tax rebate.

Over the years, we decided that we, as a society, wanted more from our government. So we voted for governments that spent more than they made, and racked up debts. There is a time when it makes economic sense for the gov't to rack up debt - usually, in order to spur the economy when private sector spending is low. But that is balanced, obviously, to pay off the debt when times are good.

Who do we owe the money to? Banks, mutual funds, regular Canadians, etc etc.

Tax cuts = higher tax revenue
This equation actually works.

With all of the changes and new geo-politics that we know we are going to face in a world where resources are King, I think it would be prudent to take a time out and use these funds in pursuit of a true national vision and use this surplus to start putting the plan into action....

More infrastructure repair

Improved health delivery system

More dollars for the Arts

A better focus on education

But most importantly, involving the People in a discourse on where Canada should be going in this world...They want us to think Global, so they say, so WE should do just that, by setting the foundation for a proud nation; The True North Strong and Free....

Otherwise we'll be stuck on this hamster wheel of discourse for years....And we will be road kill on the highway of Life....

Let's get our House in order before the tax break craze catches on too deep...and we find ourselves calling Washington before we can sink an oil well....

Tax cuts??? They can keep their mercantile speel for someone who's listening....

Hey, here's an idea, how about the tories keep a promise and use some of the extra cash to reduce wait times in hospitals like they said they would.

It was one of their 5 priorities afterall.

Instead they move ahead with the Liberal tax plan and a GST cut Harper dosen't agree with fundamentally as an economist. Being is a populist is more important than integrity I guess.

Forget the tax cuts while we are up to our a$$es in debt.. Use the GST exclusively to pay down the debt, We don't have "extra" funds.

The debt to GDP ratio is low enough to be able to see some of that money go elswhere. Why throw it all on the debt when we need to invest?
