"Woman after woman whose exercise routine is cut shorter and shorter, whose energy wears down, all before they're even hitting the age of 30."

Karrie, it relates to what I've commented on in other forums over the last five years. Maybe, it's just me but I think the younger generation is aging faster than mine. Something in the air or environment. Or pace of living or choice of lifestyle. I see everywhere people who still young look ten years older than they should. Maybe it's related to the autism and asthma phenomena we see today that never used to be a concern. There's something different out there.
People seem to, post-25, accelerate quickly on the age chart.

The resounding view seems to be that those falling ill so young are 'canaries'. As toxins build up in humanity's system, those who are aging so quickly, arthritis striking us so young, are simply the more sensitive of our society. We're not the only sick ones... just the first to exhibit symptoms.

It's an interesting proposition. I have been doing a lot of exercise lately but it does not give me the energy I had when I was younger.

Let's play blame game yay!

-McDonald for providing fat food
-Chips that says, "none trans fat" actually tells the truth but its not just trans fat what makes a person fat
-People are addicted to fast food, thanks for amazing job by multi corporation
-Fast Food store is everywhere, obviously, in fast decision, I doubt you make any nice valuable choice.
-School's lack of education of personal health
-Individual's lack of knowledge of what is best for themselves
-People are getting stupider each year.
-Food is so easy to get
-People consume too much, I mean REALLY, a poor African-American woman can be over weight (extremely) even though they have low income. I DON'T GET IT. IF THEY ARE POOR, THEY AREN'T THEY SHIVERING AND AT LEAST NEAR BONES SO I CAN SYMPATHIZE THEM. I WANT TO.

We need rationing, its about time people stop consuming (weee Fidel Castro~~)

The problem is that people in general have become pretty lazy. Next time, take the stairs instead of the elevator. And instead of driving to the store, or work, ride your bike (if you have one) or go for a run.

Obesity is gaining an army of apologists. Just this summer we were told obesity was likely a social phenomenon: if your buddies were fat it's likely you'd be too.
This morning on CNN comes word that obesity in many cases is likely caused by a virus. Some folks get mumps, some folks get fat.
Clearly, the march is on. And the mantra of the ages wafts through the air: it's not your fault...it's not your fault.

Scientists proved the link between obesity and adenovirus 36 ages ago.

See, it's a marvellous closing circle. Personal responsibility is getting the bum's rush everywhere!

? If you caught a virus that made you gain weight, would you seriously not want an eventual diagnosis and possibly treatment?

is medical research just supposed to sit quietly by for conditions that people find distasteful and leave it up to 'personal responsibility' for people to either cure themselves or die?

For the vast majority of obese people, being told that their weight was cuased by a virus doesn't change a thing. It's still their struggle.

Helping people lose weight is a growing industry. Why kill the cash cow? Making them guilty and feeling bad about themselves is part and parcel of that money making machine.

Fat is the new whipping boy. Can't be racist, can't be gender bias, hell you can't even hate on the fags no more. But it's open season on fatty. And you know fat people choose to be that way, mostly they are just stupid and really they are just picking up the slack left by the blacks, the jews, the queers, and the chinese and those god damned working women. A natural progression.

I wonder who is next on the public pillory, short people? You know they deserve some public ridicule.

You sure we're not related Unf.??

Nugly, shave, you'll feel better.
Karrie, you miss the point. Current research trends on obesity favour factors that diminish personal responsibility. We can't keep offering crutches to people when personal resolve and conviction might be the best antidote.

You're still suggesting NOT diagnosing illness, because you don't like the symptom. I'm not missing the point.

Personal resolve and conviction have obviously not done it for a large portion of the population. This is what sparked the search that uncovered adenovirus36. The obesity rates in many areas had risen faster than calorie consumption and lack of exercise could account for. What you're suggesting is that it's a disservice for researchers to look into why these poor people could starve themselves and exercise every single day and still be clinically overweight... because you've judged that those particular patients were somehow lacking in personal resolve and conviction. I'm sorry, but none of that magically erases disease. The researchers can turn a blind eye all they want... it won't make obesity disappear. Whereas, having an understanding of the working of adenovirus is a HOPE... a thin hope, but a hope nonetheless, in solving the hyperactivation of fat cells that they see in some patients. A possible way of curing a portion of the population who are obese through bad luck, rather than strictly personal fault.

It seems to me that in a medical system currently claiming it's burdened by the obese, that is nothing but a good thing.

Or maybe it's laziness and sloth. In my neighborhood, all of the 30 to 50 year old mothers are training for marathons, and they don't have weight problems. Several of these women have 4 or 5 kids, and full time jobs as professionals.

The only environmental factor that makes people fat and achy is called television. Get off the goddam couch, and STOP COMPLAINING.

People who say stuff like this obviously don't have too many friends with real health issues. Someone with fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis isn't going to be able to exercise much. My friend is carrying a little extra weight since having surgery for cancer. Being sick, then recovering from surgery does change your ability to exercise for months. Saying tv is the ONLY environmental factor that makes people fat or achy is just silly. You probably think "Oh, I don't mean someone with cancer obviously..." but she is really sensitive about comments like that.

Ten Penny, I'll second that! (Now I didn't say a second helping!)
Karrie, you're missing the point. Obesity is not a disease. It's a phenomenon, a modern one. We have never had so many overweight people of all ages. It's a cultural disposition fed, not by a virus, but by lifestyle choice and pattern. Researchers can posit adenovirus36 'til they're blue but they'll still have to explain why that might be a critical factor today when it wasn't 30 or more years ago. Obesity is front page news now because it is a much discussed, widespread contemporary problem with contemporary roots.

Adenovirus 36 very well may not have existed 30 years ago.

Refusing to see that obesity is sometimes a symptom of an underlying condition outside of diet or exercise, is an extremely narrow view of a highly complex issue.

Feel free to paint the issue with as many broad strokes as you like. Anyone in the medical or health care field, or anyone who's ever been diagnosed with an arthritic condition, knows what I'm talking about.

I'll leave it at that.
