Ah yes, fat people; the media have them squarely in their sights now don't they? One of the few remaining groups folks can piss on and not get sued.

This will last, and people will care for just as long as it takes for the next cause celebre to take a walk by the camera,

Start a poll; who or what is next? Amputees, lepers, skinny people, Austrians, people who eat/don't eat fish/meat/yogurt.

Get the drift?

But, then again, this is supposed to be humorous, right:lol:, sorry.:lol::lol::lol::lol:ha ha fukking ha.

Except for the amputees and lepers we do make fun them. You forgot the tall people in your selection though

Wow, there are some big issues I have with this article.

1. Did the research itself say that you have a higher chance of BECOMING fat, or did it say that having fat friends makes it more likely that you ARE fat? Did they make people form new friendships and plot their BMI changes? I strongly doubt it.

2. Why on earth would having a fat friend make it more likely that you will be fat, than if your relatives are fat? I can't believe that my best friend gaining weight makes it more likely that I'll gain weight, than if my husband gains.

They seem to totally gloss over the fact that friends tend to form around common interests. Many of my friends are other moms with fibro... Duh, we have weight problems. I didn't catch it from them though!

My sister is an avid bodybuilder... do I need to explain what the majority of her friends look like?

It's a chicken and the egg issue in my mind. Which comes first, truly?

If you're putting on weight, you might want to take a look at who you're hanging around with.
A study published in the July 26, 2007 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that obesity may be "socially contagious." The study found that your chances of becoming obese are much higher if someone you are closely connected to becomes obese.
And it may not be because you're spending evenings sitting on the couch with your spouse or kids munching potato chips, eyes glued to the tube. Blame your friends.
Researchers found that if someone you consider a friend becomes obese, your chances of crossing 30 on the old BMI scale go up by 57 per cent. Among mutual friends the odds go up by 171 per cent.
If your spouse becomes obese, you have a 37 per cent chance of doing the same. Among siblings, odds increase by 40 per cent.
On the bright side, that neighbour who loves to mow his lawn and show off his expanding gut won't have any effect on your odds of becoming obese.

If you are overweight, who do you blame?

At the very least it's good to have somebody to blame.....:smile:

yeah... because that's EXACTLY what the world needs... people turning on their friends for 'turning' them fat. Or worse yet, ditching relationships lest they taint them. It's hard enough dealing with people like my sister as it is, constantly bitching about obese people and how there's no excuse for it. Now it will be a personal attack on her to show up overweight. lol.

Turning them fat...too funny. God if only this had been the case when I was in my early 20's. I so desperately wanted to gain weight!

Tridit, I hear ya! I spent about 15yrs trying to gain weight. Finally at 35 I'd quit smoking and with a strict regiment of eating what ever I liked and as much as possible with as little exercise as possible I gained 20lb! Which I discovered I hated and am now in the process of lossing by not eating what ever I want, working out 5 times a week. It's a very very weird sense of humour that Nature has!

With me, it's kind of funny really. My relatives made so many cracks about how 'big' I was when I was young (which I realized too late was just my uncles' way of commenting on my boobs and hips), that I was convinced from the time I was about 10 yrs old on, that I was fat.

Now that I really am fat, people express concern about my weight gain, and it just ends up confusing me, because I feel exactly the same size as I have since I was 10, and no one expressed concern then! lol. I was looking through an album from highschool witha friend, and I spotted a pic of me. I said "holy crap I was slim", and she just looked at me confused. I tried to explain, but, she's skinny, she didn't get it.

Oh, I guess it's a good thing she's moving away, before I have time to 'turn' her. lol.
