POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- An Iowa woman was charged with killing her newborn daughter by tossing her down a hotel trash chute from the seventh floor, police said. Ashley Truitt, 18, of Solon, Iowa, was being held on Monday without bond on one count of murder, Broward County sheriff's officials said. Truitt told police she hid her pregnancy from her parents and boyfriend. They were all staying at the Wyndham Resort on Saturday when authorities found a bloody knife in the hallway and the newborn's body in a trash bin, sheriff's officials said. Truitt said she gave birth in the bathroom, using a kitchen knife to cut the umbilical cord. She then put the baby in a plastic bag with some bath towels and threw it down the trash chute, authorities said. An autopsy performed on Sunday found the newborn died from blunt trauma to the head, likely from being dropped in the trash chute. A phone message left at the Truitt family's home in Iowa was not immediately returned on Monday.

Women have been dropping their babies down garbage chutes since they found the kid would fit into the opening. One that I read about, had to dump her kid because she couldn't find a babysitter, and she wanted to go to a party. She knew, as all the women know, that she would get a slap on the wrist or maybe even a spanking. Postpartum depression notwithstanding, a human being knows right from wrong, I think it is about time women started getting the death penalty, or some other substantial punishment. If there is a question about her humanity, then take her to the vet, let him put her down. When the hell are people going to get it through their heads, murder is murder. It doesn't matter how old or young the victim was.

I think this type of thing is tragic. In most states women can drop an unwanted child off at a hospital, no questions, asked thanks to safe harbor laws. There are so many couples who would gladly raise and love those children.

She may not realize the magnitude of her actions right now as many teenagers don't quite see the big picture. I'm sure as time wears on she will be haunted by this to her death.

Or she might simply do what so many people do when faced with the repercussions of their actions, and that is to deflect all blame and responsibility onto someone else, or something else. Maybe they'll simply blame this tragedy on Post partem depression (Is it only women kill others while under depression?)

That poor poor baby. I think we need to remember who the victim of this crime is and it's not that teenager. In today's era of internet access in every library, every school there is no excuse for not finding the help one needs.

The thing is what sort of upbringing did she have? It led to

a)her not be able see what she was doing to something that grew inside her and be so detached to the killing.
b)What sort of parents that would not notice the change in her wieght or care. Did she realize that they would not notice the drastic change in her after the delivery as well.
I blame the parenting.
As stated everywhere online these days.Some people should not have kids.the teenager just did not have the proper upbringing to know reality.
