the software that comes with your motherboard should have some sort of utility which will spit out cpu temp, motherboard temp etc. A good cpu temp is kinda subjective, depening on the type of CPU. Generally speaking though, your CPU shouldn't be exceeding 50 degrees celcius under load. My cpu runs around 30 degrees at idle, 35-40 under load.

durka can u be more specific about the utility? I dont even know what my motherboard is now, it's so long since i bought it. I know i can get the temp by hammering buttons during startup (can never remember which one), but is there a windows utility?

You list Vista home premium at $120.00 I assume that is an update. I just paid $250.00 for XP home because I wasn't sure of the lineage of my copy of win 98. Does MS check closely on these things? The reason I ask is that My wife wants to change to XP.

The reason for my question is that My wife wants to change up to XP. Should she go with the update or the full install, owing to the questionable heredity of her copy of win 98? The cost difference is a 150 bucks.

herman,

Download this: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer . it should be able to detect your cpu temps. The best read you can get is by the bios though, keep hitting the delete button when it's doing POST.

It's a full version I got, not the upgrade. the store I bought it from sells OEM software to anyone on the street. normally you have to be a system builder to purchase OEM software. Here is the store i got it from: http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=012497&cid=SW.815 . it goes for $144.99 when purchased online, in the store cash tends to drop the price though.

Juan, The upgrade version of XP should work fine, it doesn't look for a previous version of windows.

Nice, I'm sure you won't have a problem making some decent coin out in Alberta. maybe you will be able to afford one of those new quard core cpu's when you get back.

Get one of those cans of compressed air and open up your case. Blow away at all the electronic parts. Also make sure all the vent holes are clear on your case.

That's a good suggestion. Did you know that in most stores you have to buy compressed air behind the counter now? Apparently people use it to get high.
