Funny.....all the years the Liberal'swere in power they signed on the dotted line for Kyoto, but they NEVER took any EFFECTIVE action. They didn't even really plan ahead for the implementation of Kyoto and now they are wanting action! What a bunch of thieving hypocrites!
Exactly, in a twisted sort of way, I'd like the Liberals to be in power right now with this legislation and see how they twist in the wind trying to get around it again.

All the years the Liberals were in power they were more occupied with holding the country together, something that looked very uncertain during the first years of their mandate. They had to balance the Bloq and PQ in Quebec, who came very close to winning their referendum and also the Reformers here in the west that would have screamed bloody murder if Ottawa had tried to dictate energy policy to Alberta, Saskatchwan and B.C.

The Conservatives have been running their mouths off about how terrible the Liberals are on the environment but I fail to see how allowing the energy sector to set it's own standards is going to be effective in the least. The precedent is that big oil and gas will get away with as much as they can and screw the long term consequences.

The Conservatives are talking about limiting CO2 emssions based on intensity of activity. That is, they say they'll lower the emissions per dollar amount invested in oil and gas production. Considering the huge investments that will be going into the oil sands alone(last I heard it was $125 Billion) there's no question the emission rate is going to go way up. Personally I think it's obscene what the Conservatives are trying to do. Who cares how the economy is doing if the environment it's based on collapes.

I think that's the first time I've seen someone use that excuse to explain the Liberal ineptness

Right and the wounds and divisions healed overnight????? They set the grounds for all that followed in Quebec...and the Conservatives are playing the same divide and conquer politics again that caused the whole soveirgnty crisis in the first place. And now the stakes are the very environment we depend on for...everything. IMO you can't get more shortsighted than that.

What do you like about it?

The whole darned idea. Cutting back emmissions to pre 1990 levels. May not be perfect but beats the heck out of killing any chance our children have of a decent future or their childrens children. Do it for your great grandkids. I keep hoping David Suzuki will run for office. I would so vote him in. I'm a tree hugging pagan who does not even own a car. A 200,000 dollar home and a 60,000 a year job but no stinky polluting 4 wheeled appliance for me thank you. I work for a major US based multinational chemical company that supplies the auto industry. I can buy stocks at HUGE discounts and make thousands of dollar but no way will I put my money into a company like that. Take their money but not invest in it.
