Believe it or not addressing this issue speaks to helping the disadvantaged. Next time you drive through the low income parts of town, count the banks.

I honestly believe there should be an investigation into banks and where their profits come from. I've caught them a few times charging a service charge when they shouldn't have. I'm sure I've missed some. But if they do that to all there customers thats alot of money made illegaly. They've changed my plan a few times without asking me. This is RBC. And they've been better then Scotiabank.

CBC is always double posting...I'd say that's grounds for banning :laughing8:

Those of you who say don't use Debit:

You know you get charged a fee for going to the teller (the human variety) in most banks too right?

They charge you for getting your money either way.

Finally! They're getting my vote. I always felt I was getting ripped off. Banks make huge profits at the working class expense.

If you don't want to pay ATM fees, I have a suggestion: don't use ATMs.

It's quite a simple concept; I'm sure that even a member of the NDP could figure that out.

They dont pay in England. Why pay for a service no one provides? Maintaining an ATM machine is cheaper then paying for tellers.
Also, why do I pay a hook up fee for phones and internet when no one actually hooks anything up?! If I'm paying a "hook up" fee, I want someone climbing up a ladder and hooking a wire to something.

Thank you so much for your sound advise. Unhappily, I don't have wads of money to keep cluttering up my humble abode, and for those who've been robbed, it makes a good deal more sense for many of them perhaps to not bother with carrying or handling cash of any kind.

People who are disabled or elderly for example , might become targets although the home-invasions appear to limited to the reasonably well-off. But hey expanding the hunting territory is inevitable. Personally I either store a great deal of milk and consumables that will be consumed over the month and keep a good stock of non-food items that require frequent replenishment...toiletries etc.

Unforeseen situations (my cat got infested with fleas {indoor cat never out} ), light bulbs...

If you can, please forgive those of us who fail to apply your eloquent logic.

Oh come on, get real. Just because you're incapable of forethought doesn't mean there should be a law against fees.

"I want to use an ATM for my convenience, but don't want to pay for it. Let's outlaw fees."

Sorry, I don't buy this pathetic excuse for not planning ahead. Before there were ATMs, people made sure they had enough money for their needs. You could either do the same, or accept the cost. Stop whining and expecting the world to write laws to suit your personal preferences.

ATM's rule...................

I think they are the best thing since sliced bread.
We deal with TD, and pay no service charge for using the TD machine in the TD bank. I believe being olfarts and over 60 has something to do with it. Club 60 and yer still alive thing.
When we are forced to use a ATM that is not of the TD breed, we are charged $1.50...............the alternative is to use credit card (ok), or carry lots of cash. No way.

When using the ATM I see people walking into the bank to STAND IN LINE to make a deposit or withdrawl and get charged for using a teller, when they could use the ATM and begone in a trice. Canadians are famous for standing in line. Yetch.:pukeright: Why are we (not me) like that??

Anyway, yay ATM

PS, Oh yah, Jack can say or do anything he wants. His party ain't gettin elected and he knows it. Just likes to turn the famous strong jawed profile to the camera, smile, and enjoy the photo-op. Keep smilin Jacky, the boss loves idiots.:blob7::blob8::eek:ccasion8::eek:ccasion9:

Layton is concerned that 707 million transactions cost 420 million? That's what, an average of 60 cents each? Does he not realize these machines cost about 100 grand a piece to purchase, not to mention thousands to maintain? Why should Bank A spend 100 grand on a machine plus armoured car service etc to dish out money to service the customers of Bank B? Who the heck needs ATM cash anyway? Perhaps the drug pushers don't take interac but nearly everyone else does.

I'm still not certain here... are you saying "keep your money at home" or are you saying keep your money in a bank that you'll have to take a bus to to withdraw money from everytime you need cash?

The bank is in the business of making money...great!

Of course all these poor nearly bankrupt Canadian banks couldn't possibly afford to provide a break for anyone...on their mortgage rates or ATM charges....I understand......

join the club. although come to think of it, this explains why banks are always closed outside of business hours. If we have to use the machines they get more money
It's often a catch 22 for the banks. I know there was analysis of saturday openings at a branch that determined over half of those coming in to use teller and business wicket service were customers of other banks that were closed. From a business standpoint it makes no sense to operate like that. If a Zellers store discovered that over half of their business traffic and service counter walkups were Wal Mart customers looking for a way to refund Wal Mart purchases then the store would probably have to re-evaluate why it is there. One of the reasons they charge fees and people pay them is because overall the banking system in Canada is the envy of the world. Overall there is good value.

Count the non-bank cash machines in bars, near lottery stands, and in cheap hotels.

i was told that using one of those PayDay cheque cashing places only cost a small amount, then read where their own association wanted laws in place to limit fees to 20 dollars per hundred. Mygawd, what are they charging the poor? As to the ATMs, it was just a good op for Layton to get his name and photo into the news & will assure the Banks get enormous campaign funding for the Tories and Libs.
