AHIC (Addiction/Homeless Industrial Complex) is doing great.
The City Of Regina is trying a different approach now, in a neighbourhood where the city counsellors and police department employees don’t reside. Without consulting the neighbourhood residents and homeowners, they’ve selected one park to not enforce City Of Regina byelaws against permanent structures and overnight camping.
Kurtis Crane said he visits the Pepsi Park encampment frequently. “I'm only here because my friends are here and I love my friends and I'll stand by my friends,” he said.
The City Of Regina has no plans to clear out this encampment, as it’s not in their neighbourhoods that they reside in for those that made that decision. It does happen to be 3 to 4 City blocks from our home though.
The “selective tolerance” at Pepsi Park occurs alongside ongoing municipal policy shifts. Regina City Council previously voted to explore creating designated, sanctioned encampment sites (but not in their own neighbourhoods) rather than relying solely on displacement (of encampments that might spring up in their own neighbourhoods). While a comprehensive citywide policy remains under review, the current hands-off approach at Pepsi Park serves as a temporary managed compromise while long-term social housing options are planned. It’s an absolute shit show.
I took my phone with me when I walked my dogs this today, as otherwise, it would sound like Absolute fiction. We only went about 30 blocks round-trip because it was a hot day at about 30°C this afternoon.
I call it an invitation to open crime and a complete blind eye as long as it’s not in somebody else’s neighbourhood.
Somebody is minutes away from getting robbed above. Because they’re still standing up more or less they’ll at least wake up and still have their shoes and pants.
