OTTAWA — A 2021 tip from the FBI lead police to arrest a Toronto youth earlier this week, after what the RCMP describe as a “lengthy” investigation.
In a Thursday morning press release, the RCMP said that the accused — who was a youth at the time of the alleged offences — was charged with participating in the activities of a terrorist group for the purpose of enhancing the ability of the terrorist group to carry out terrorist activity, and counselling another person to commit a terrorism offence.
The RCMP declined to provide details on the accused’s age but told the Toronto Sun the accused — who was arrested on Monday — is a resident of Toronto.
The investigation centred around the accused allegedly creating and distributing terrorist propaganda online.
Police said the individual will appear in court next Tuesday, but they declined to say which courthouse the case would be heard.
Monday’s arrest is the latest in a string of terror-related arrests in Ontario.
Earlier this month, 62-year-old Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi and his son Mostafa Eldidi, 26, were arrested in a Richmond Hill hotel room for what the RCMP allege was a plot to carry out a violent terror attack in Toronto.
The elder Eldidi is also accused of participating in a 2015 ISIS torture video where an abductee was dismembered with a sword.
In July, 21-year-old Canadian Zachareah Adam Quraishi was killed in a foiled knife attack against security forces guarding Netiv Ha’asara — an Israeli town about 60 km southeast of Tel Aviv.
Quraishi reportedly arrived in Israel the previous day posing as a tourist.
These arrests come at a time when anti-Semitic hate crimes against Canada’s Jewish community is at an all-time high, fuelled by anti-Israel extremists emboldened by the Oct. 7 terror attacks that saw Hamas terrorists conduct a campaign of murder, kidnappings and sexual assault against Israeli towns.
