No they don't, orbits are maintained by the combined effects of velocity and gravity. Any object of any size can be put into any orbit, you just have to get the thrust vectors right. We could put a basketball into orbit around the earth beyond the moon if we wanted to.

You’re still wrong. The moon is receding because the tidal interactions of the earth and moon transfer angular momentum to the moon. It’s got nothing to do with the temperature of either body.
