When I was taking my accounting classes at University, the Prof had mentioned how vulnerable the "just in time" supply chain was and that it wouldn't take take much to collapse the whole thing. Yes, it saved companies money, but in the long run, due to the current situation, it's going to cost us horribly in the end.
The video is also correct in saying that our political leaders have no clue how dangerous this can or will get if they don't take this issue seriously. So ya, we're "fucked". The leadership in both countries are inept & incompetent so we shouldn't be too surprised. 2022 will likely not get much better by the looks of it.

While saving companies money was the sole purpose of just in time process and the products and services led to lower prices to the consumer, it also always had finished product issues.
Politics can not and will not interfere with private business practices. Just because so many private enterprises chose to deal with chinese manufacturers is not a political decision, it is a business decision.

Only partly. Politics is always meddling in business with tax breaks or laws. Environmental and tax laws in North America, along with politicians on the take made manufacturing in other countries work. Then there are trade deals that usually benefit the political class, where we let some third world dictatorship peddle shoddy goods here in exchange for buying our natural resources.
Of course if city planners gave even passing thought to getting products into stores the problem would be a lot less.
Tax laws are separate to supply chain issues. As are trade deals.
Trade deals are to make products cheaper for suppliers and eventually to consumers. After all, Canadians want products cheaper..... regardless of who and under what conditions they are made.
Tax laws and trade deals have a huge impact on supply chain. If there was no tax advantage to making cheap shit half a world away we would have much shorter supply chains with fewer interuptions.

Ah Christ…..(re Shoppers). My girlfriend is on about eight different things a month and I want two…. So throughout this entire pandemic we would have to go to shoppers drug Mart 6 to 8 different times each month to renew prescriptions…. Because it’s not like you could have things can do at the same time or anything during a public health emergency. Great….
If not for such a high labour and manufacturing cost here in Canada to provide the product cheaper, there would be no need to go half a world away to make the goods we want.
Got to stop looking for excuses as to why we have no manufacturing products and look within. We have tax laws to subsidize businesses in Canada and trade deals wth other countries to get the merchandise that Canadians want and need.
Shoppers is not the only pharmacy that is cutting back its levels. It seems that because we do not manufacture the drugs in Canada, we have a supply shortage and in order to ensure all users of a particular drug will get some, they ration the drugs.
So, while you may not like it, what if you really ran out and they did not have any in stock because they gave it all to the person in front of you??

The Norwegian army wants its underwear back. Even soiled.
According to Euronews , supply shortages have become so bad that anyone enlisting in the Norwegian army will have to return used underwear, socks and bras once their services ends. The decision was made because shortages, supply chain issues, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic made it harder for the army to purchase an adequate supply of undergarments.
Public broadcaster NRK reported many conscripts would voluntarily return intimate apparel in years past, but now that’s been made mandatory. The unmentionables must be washed, cleaned and returned in good condition.

The Guardian reported that underwear shortages could impact the operation of those currently enlisted, and in some cases, “the safety of the soldier.”
In Norway, army conscription is compulsory. However, not everyone is taken into the military, the Guardian reported. Candidates are questioned about their mental and physical health, criminal records, and if they’re motivated to be a soldier.
Those who meet specified criteria — only about one in six — are selected to serve in the army.
