OTTAWA — Pierre Poilievre has launched his bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, with other members of Parliament already pledging their support.

He is the first candidate to announce his intention to run for the party’s top spot after MPs forced Erin O’Toole out of the position only three days earlier.

In a three minute video released on social media on Saturday night, Poilievre criticizes government spending and says he wants to make “Canadians the freest people on earth.”

Seated at a desk in front of a bookshelf with soft music playing over his words, Poilievre doesn’t mention the Conservative party by name or the contest in his announcement, saying only that he wants the job as prime minister.

Poilievre is throwing his hat into the ring before the race has officially begun and the party’s election committee doesn’t yet exist and no rules have been released.

As such, he can’t begin fundraising.

A document attached to his launch video released Saturday lists one of the options for supporters to choose to help is by purchasing memberships to vote for Poilievre.

Poilievre’s announcement was quickly followed by many MPs throwing their support behind his candidacy.

“I’m with Pierre,” tweeted Ontario MP Melissa Lantsman. “No question — Pierre is the right answer to a strong (and) united Conservative Party.”

Longtime Conservative Manitoba MP James Bezan also endorsed Poilievre, saying in a tweet that he has the communication skills, work ethic and “strong conservative values” to defeat Trudeau.

Many Conservatives regard the 42-year-old Ottawa-area MP a natural front-runner in the race.

He currently serves as the party’s finance critic and was first elected to the House of Commons back in 2004 at the age of 24, serving in former prime minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.

Throughout his time in Parliament, Poilievre has built up a reputation as as fiery performer in the House, who is deeply steeped in conservative values and thinking.

He enters the race with a considerable social media following and during last year’s election struck out with his own campaign videos and slogan, separate than that of the party’s or leader’s.

This is Conservatives thinking that they'll have their own Trudeau and find out it's a used car salesman like Americans did with Trump.

Maybe….less the entitlement and the ethics scandals. Pierre Poilievre can come across as abrasive in a ‘cut to the chase’ sorta way, but I have yet to catch him an lie at this point, which I can’t say for Trudeau.

More abrasive than True Dope? Damn.

May be that I'm just uncommonly sensitive to wokester happy talk and finger-wagging. Chaps my ass something fierce.

Of course he hasn't lied, he's not in a position of power so there's nothing to require a lie yet.

Don't worry, he's a Harper acolyte so the lies will be out in full force.

We already know that Conservatives are the heaviest abusers of the truth. They need to be to carry their lot.

Question about terminology. . . I'm minded of a book (Ten Pound Penalty by Dick Francis) where a British politician's son asked "Are you running for office?" He replied, "If we were in America, like your friend Jeremy, I would be, but since this is Britian, I'm standing for Parliament."

I know American terms tend to kinda overwhelm Canada sometimes, but is it proper to "run" or "stand" up there?

By the way, I like the fact y'all call your districts "ridings." Kinda cool.

Didn’t realize a politician had to be in a ‘position of power’ to lie or be caught in a lie.

Pierre Poilievre has been in politics for 15-20 years now or something like that (longer than Justin Trudeau), so if he was going to be involved in or caught in lies & ethics scandals, wouldn’t that presumably be long enough to establish a behavioural pattern?

First elected to the House of Commonsfollowing the 2004 federal election in the riding of Nepean—Carleton, Poilievre won re-election three times. In 2015, he ran and won in the re-established riding of Carleton and was re-elected in the same riding in 2019 and 2021. Having served as the critic for finance and the National Capital Commission from 2017 to 2021, Poilievre became the Opposition critic for jobs and industry in February 2021 before regaining his old position in November 2021.
