So, by tigerbrights reasoning, women don't owe the suffragets anything, and Afro-American don't owe anything to the many, such as mlk, for their rights in America. Granted, both still have a way to go, but it appears no one is responsible for where they are now compared to the past.

Both "sides" of this ridiculous argument are correct.

Tigger is speaking in the philosophical/poetic tradition embodied in the U.S. Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

Hence, rights are given by a Creator, or by Nature, or are simply part of the fabric of the world, and that the most a government or law can do is secure those rights, keeping them safe from infringement.

Petros is, of course, correct in that all of this is tosh, and "rights" are simply a legal term for the strongest of legal protections.

And since nobody here but me can provide a decent definition of the term "right," y'all just end up yelling past each other about concepts you can't even define.

Hey I'll agree but he seems to have presented all of this as our community having to thank something WE fought for and still are fighting for.

Like we had to thank all of society for our rights after we fought for them.

You know kinda like that native story where the preachers chastise the native american for not thanking him for saving him from hell and the native asked why thank him from being saved from something he didn't know existed until he told him.

That the vibe I got.
