Perhaps if buddy had the understanding that the general fiscal health of Canada is dependent on the existence of a healthy, strong underlying economic sector(s) that are successful in generating as many taxable transactions as possible, they might have the basis for appreciating the domino effect of the value of such, particularly as it relates to small/med size businesses, the resulting employment and consequent taxation (GST, PST, Carbon Tax, Income Tax, Muni Tax, etc, etc, etc.)
The above, of course, is founded on these core sectors and for Canada, they are resourced based in the form of Forestry, Fisheries, Mining, Energy/oil & Gas, Agriculture, etc.. Spun-off from these core industries are the additional sectors, supporting services and products required not only to keep the industries operating, but also the support services/industries to support the employee base and their families.
Without the ability to churn as many of these transactions as possible, the revenues to gvt are impaired.
All one needs to do is look to the City of Vancouver announcing the possibility of filing for bankruptcy to appreciate that you can't run a service-based economy without some kind of core sector to support it.
That said, Canada is the equivalent of Vancouver without the combined resource sectors.
