Why so?

This is not a criminal prosecution. The standards of evidence and proof do not apply. There is one, and only one, criterion here: how do the senators vote? Probably just as well it all turned out the way it did. Dr. Smith just didn't turn out to be too credible and it just wouldn't be right to "deep six" a guy mid career, apparently with a spotless record on account of a hysterical woman making accusations 36 years after the alleged incident, especially as no corroboration appeared to be forthcoming from her "witnesses".
