Another sign (along with joining 2 World Wars that they started but couldn't finish on their own) that the 1867 independence was another sham.

If they moved on the Falklands as slow as the brexit vote everyone there would be speaking Spanish.

There is a lot of unnecessary waste in packaging. But packaging is largely consumer driven so what has to happen is a widespread and determined populist movement towards less wasteful and harmful packaging. Difficult for society like ours to achieve given the current generation of adults - but always hope for the future.

Fleece is another example of unnecessary and harmful consumer driven pollution.

By the way, the demand for paper is in a free-fall right now due to the demise of printed media, newspapers especially. Wood for paper pulp is a farmed, renewable crop in most of the country and it employs tens of thousands of Canadians who are going to lose their livelihood due to the dramatic drop in newsprint consumption.

Embrace the paper straw.

Maybe, we can make it a "national security issue", Trump style.

Why? Can you only put those in plastic containers?

Except for one major problem. Most nations do not recycle plastic. Just visit any Latin American country. The roads and streets are littered with plastic waste. Ditto for Africa and most of Asia. The solution is much simpler; go back to using paper straws and cups or better still cups and straws made out of biodegradable materials.

How is the Western world not using plastic straws going to stop these countries from not using them?

excellent analogy for once.

Plastic straws are the internal combustion engine of packaging-unnecessarily wasteful and harmful to the environment
