For years, Finland, bordering the Soviet Union and now the Russian Federation and so depending on it somewhat economically, has never joined NATO and, for its own economic interests, had to remain somewhat neutral towards both NATO and the Warsaw Pact and now towards both NATO and the Russian Federation.

Due to its precarious situation, NATO countries have always been somewhat understanding of its economic predicament and so promoted close ties with it without necessarily expecting it to reciprocate on the military and other such fronts.

Now it would seem Canada might find itself in a similar situation. As the EU, Japan, and other states drift away from the US and start to forge their own relationships with each other, Canada will still continue to depend on the US and so, like Finland towards the USSR and now the Russian Federation, will need to maintain close ties with the US while trying to maintain close ties with the other states too. We can hope that just as we've always understood and embraced Finland in the face of its difficult predicament, that the other states will do the same to Canada.

Could Canada become the new Finland?

Tax and happiness
At budget time in May, both sides of politics promised us tax cuts and no doubt we’ll hear a lot more about them before the next election.
But will lower taxes actually make us happier?
Once again this year, the top ten in the UN’s World Happiness survey featured five Scandinavian countries – Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Finland, which topped the list.
Why are the countries with the highest taxes the happiest?

Outside of Iceland weren't these nations under direct threat of communism so wouldn't be fair to say adapt to a form of socialism or become full communist? I would say they are happy with their compromise

Those "snowflake" Swedes were and still are defending themselves with some ferocity. They willingly pay that tab for their freedom and independence.

We most certainly do not want to become any more socialist than we already are.

Socalism is about as far as you can get from freedom and independence as you can get short of being outright communist.
A socialist is a communist in an Armini suit.

I remember reading that Sweden's government owns a smaller percentage of its country's GDP than the US owns of its.

Maybe, the reality is different from the propaganda. The Swedes are times freer than the Americans because their place works and the USA no longer does.

Sweden is very socialist. They even have a school voucher program and privately-owned schools can participate in it.Sweden is also quite pro-free trade. Very socialist it would seem.
