Should we have a Referendum on Pipeline Projects?

It's clear that we don't know if Canadians actually want a pipeline or not.

Maybe it's time we find out.

Nah, you guys win. We'll just ship all that oil by train, right through the cities and towns along the way. We've already had at least 3 oil train accidents this year so what could possibly go wrong.

I consider referendums to be a failure of the democratic process.

Pipelines should be decided by those people who are directly and indirectly affected by them - not by people who are far removed from their dangers.

I wouldn't call them a failure.

They're an expression of a direct democracy and there are good reasons for why we have a representative democracy.

We elect people to make these decisions. If they are unable to do that then why are they being elected?

Won't happen, mf. Far too late to even consider it. The decision is the Feds alone and they have spoken continuously in support of the extension. I am watching him speak right now, after having met with Premier Notley and Horgan. The pipeline will be built.

Our illustrious prime minister is on the television right now assuring Kinder Morgans shareholders that the pipeline will be built.

Not a word about First Nations.

It's all about Canada you see.

Mr Trudeau "we are all one country"

Mr Trudeau: we will assert Canada's constitutional authority to complete this project"

You do not have that authority, son.

Ah and now he switches to French in order to explain himself to the boss.

The Boss - sorry Le Patron - informed the Prime Minister yesterday that his assertion that the federal government is the sole authority for the transfer of energy between provinces is a spurious statement.

Yet the Prime Minister continues to invoke the "National Interest" as if it was a talisman of some sort, that in and of itself transferred power to the federal authority.

It does not.

It is double speak.

If the Morgan expansion is in the National Interest why was Energy East not in the National Interest.

This Expansion - if it happens - will happen because First Nations and the Province of BC ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN.

Not because the federal government demands it.

Best you bone up on the Feds constitutional rights in this matter, Hoid because you are sadly lacking in understanding that indeed they do have the authority, much as you would have it otherwise.

Tell it to the National Assembly - I am merely repeating what they said yesterday.

Apples and oranges, Hoid...........as you wrote in another post, Quebec has rights that BC does not. Further, Quebec has no say what-so-ever in a pipeline extension in BC.

Quebec has as much say in it as any other Canadian jurisdiction.

Are they not part of the nation?

The powers belonging to the federal authority and the provincial authority are the very basis of Confederation.

Quebec specifically told the Prime Minister yesterday that the transfer of energy from one province through another IS NOT A FEDERAL DECISION TO MAKE.

This is how our system is supposed to work: We elect representatives who are specialists in governance and law to make these grand decisions for us and if they screw it up, we fire them come next election. The rule by placebo will lead to unhappiness and anarchy. Look at the Separatistes. Look at the Brits.

Indeed the point of the parliament is to take contentious debates out of the public realm and have it occur in calm spaces with calm deliberation.

Quebec can tell the PM whatever it wants, it doesn't change the fact that the Feds have final and complete authority and jurisdiction in this matter. It does not have the authority nor the ability to over-ride Federal jurisdiction in a dispute that does not concern nor affect them.

Indeed the point of the parliament is to take contentious debates out of the public realm and have it occur in calm spaces with calm deliberation.

You obviously haven't bothered watching Question Period in the House or you wouldn't be found looking silly by stating that it is a place of 'calm spaces' and 'calm deliberation'.

It seems every time we get stuck with a Federal Liberal Government I have to explain this to the dumbfounded betrayed British Columbia Liberal supporters.

You folks live in B.C., those other guys live in Quebec. They like Quebec more than you, more than Ontario, more than Nova Scotia or even Newfoundland. Quebec has always been the favorite. It's where they all came from, except Harper or some politician I've missed, but Trudeau, Martin, Chretien, Mulroney, all came from Quebec.

Trudeau doesn't give a rats ass about British Columbia.

In fact, you guys should find a stick to bite down on, because he's about to lay some pipe and you're the repository.
