Singaporean Parliament: so different from Canada's.

What I found impressive was the quietness in the House. As the Prime Minister speaks, the room is dead silent. He doesn't just attack the opposition but rather shares collaborative words for the opposition, treating it as a partner to build Singapore.

In Canada, question period is like a clown show.

My mum, her brothers and parents used to live in Singapore when it was part of the British Empire. My grandfather was stationed there in the army. They lived in a house on stilts so it didn't get flooded during the rainy season. It was then mainly countryside around their home - it's now all skyscrapers.

A brilliant argument for capital punishment. I'm not saying that wrongful convictions can't occur; but the video shows how the deterrent effect make having it in the books worthwhile.

Trudeau could learn from this guy:

I can't imagine the current British parliament having a debate about the return of the death penalty.

I don;'t like to see a drug trafficker getting the death penalty. It's sad, really, when we consider how it hurts his family.

That said, I do like how the death penalty serves as an effective deterrent:

If I had to choose between being a heroin addict in Canada or in Singapore, I'd choose Singapore any day. In Canada, Trudeau would probably want to help me by legalizing recreational heroin and then taxing it. Singapore would want to help me by cutting off the supply. So you tell me, is Canada or Singapore the most compassionate country towards its addicts?

Cannabis is addictive too by the way.

Singapore is.

Singapore isn't a Western country and is therefore not run by a loopy, PC liberal elite.

If you were a heroin addict, would you rather live in the UK or in Singapore?

I'd want to live in Singapore.

In the UK I would be given free heroin by the police and have to make regular visits to a "heroin safe house" where I can take heroin in safety under supervision.

That's what Europe and America call 'help' nowadays.

Singapore is 3rd world with 3rd world problems

1. Duterte is Philippino, not Singaporean.

2. Singaporeans are on average better educated and wealthier than Canadians.

3. Singapore actually tries to help its addicts, unlike Canada that now wants to legalize recreational cannabis and so profit from its addicts' plight. How compassionate is that?

4. If you want me to leave Canada, then vote for a government that will make it easier for me to do so. I can easily go to Singapore on a Canadian passport, but I can't work there without a visa.

Oh, and

5. Singapore probably has a much lower crime rate than Canada too.

I'll tell you Singapore's 'third-world' problem: criminals all wanting to counterfeit Singaporean passports. A country that suffers such a problem should take it as a source of pride that criminals choose to try to counterfeit their passport because Singapore passports allow visa-free access to more countries than Canadian passports. Just because Singaporeans aren't white doesn't make them third-world.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence

There's only one legal area that I can think of off the top of my head where Singapore can learn from Canada, and that's to adopt the Nordic model for prostitution. At present, buying sex is legal in Singapore even though many peripheral activities to it are not. It was like that in Canada too until the Conservatives outlawed the buying of sex a few years ago, and rightfully so.

It's richer than Canada. It's one of the richest, most modern, countries on Earth.

Per capita, it's probably richer than the UK too. I take it that its relatively open borders (to people, not drugs, that is) probably contributes to the wealth of one of the most open trading nations in the world.

Richest per capita (US $)

Qatar: 127,660
Luxembourg: 104,003
Singapore: 87,855
Brunei: 76,884
Kuwait: 71,887
Norway: 69,249
Ireland: 69,231
UAE: 67,871
Switzerland: 59,561
San Marino: 59,058

There are some people who say Britain will become the "Singapore of Europe" when it leaves the EU in just over a year's time (whilst the EU states continue to struggle in the EU quagmire).
