Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott is calling for an emergency meeting early next year on Indigenous child welfare, declaring that the current situation resembles the horrors of Canada's residential school system that forcibly removed young Indigenous people from their families and community.

"We have to debunk that mainstream understanding that when these children are taken they are put into these loving, caring environments," she said. "That's far from the reality ... All these children want to go home."

It would be interesting to know what the children think and feel about all of this. I imagine it would depend on how brutal the situation was at home and how long they had endured the abuse. I would also challenge the author to provide stats that back up her 'far from reality' claim. I don't believe for an instant that all foster homes are the same having read of several where children endured much the same treatment as they experienced at home. However, by far the greater number of foster homes are indeed caring and nurturing. Families who do their best to provide for those in their care are now seeing those efforts disparaged and discounted.

It will be quite some time before the fostering of native children is left solely in the hands of the natives themselves. Until that happens, acknowledging the contributions provided to the children by fostering families - by the native community - would not only be the right thing to do, it might also help ensure that their children find themselves welcomed to a stable, caring family environment when the need arises.

The challenge is to denounce social reprogramming while being the biggest advocate of social reprogramming on the global stage.

Not sure how Trudeau is going to pull that one off without being a total walking contradiction

To be fair (looking at this forum), it's probably for the better.

Well well look at the ugly face that just showed up.
Too be fair, Looking at the Natives it was probably for the better. ;).

Those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it.

You’re blinded by you’re own perceived ideological righteousness mentalflake.

The very same way Canada was, when we decided to commit social reprogramming on Aboriginals and commit cultural genocide.

Nothing has changed. Our social reprogramming agenda has never stopped and never will.

Its what makes Canada, Canada. Its our identity

Says a lot for all the refugee camps that have been the norm for a lot of Arabs since the end of WWII. Residential Schools Phase II since the Canadian version was so successful in destroying heritage as a binding agent for a certain group. BTW, the Indians won that war, just not by a long shot.

Can't be much of an emergency if she is only just planing a meeting for sometime next year. Good thing she isn't in charge of emergency services. Just imagine if there was a real earthquake on a Friday evening of a long weekend and hundreds of thousands of people are left homeless and injured. Her response would be " We will study the situation early next week and decide if an inquiry is needed to determine what if any government services need to be activated".

Social reprogramming is our identity no real hurry to change anything. No one will admit they have been completely wrong
