Being the subject of Canada-wide warrants is a regular occurrence for Schafer. On July 18, he was arrested by Vancouver police, five days after failing to return to his residential correctional facility. The federal offender also prompted Canada-wide warrants in 2016, 2013 and 2010 for walking away from his halfway house.

Schafer has a long criminal history that includes break-and-enter, sexual assaults, uttering threats, robbery, and assaulting a peace officer.

In 2003, he was convicted of breaking and entering and sexual assault with a weapon in Whitehorse. He was also convicted of a similar crime, rape at knifepoint, in Old Crow, Yukon in 1999.

Baffin Island has a correctional facility and nobody want to walk away from there. At some point the rewards for being anti-social come home to haunt a person. He should have been shot dead before there was a first victim had the woman had a gun.
Alberta and Sask have lots of forest that looks the same and since the flt areas are swamp there is no walking away even if you tried. The paths in are based on a grid where you can see no farther than than 1 km. Without a map it is a maze so time also makes walking away impossible. Mosquitoes in the summer and frost in the winter make the 'Chateau' the only place a person would care to be. That is about 1/2 wat to Baffin Is.

I don't know if it's still in operation but the prison in Prince Albert wasn't a place you'd want to escape from either. Several decades ago I remember hearing about a prison break were 4 inmates managed to escape. They were back at the prison about a week or less later begging to be let back in. They were covered in mosquito and black fly bites. Even inside their noses and ears. :lol:
