Another layer of difficulty in this situation is that RM doesn't own the track the railway does and RM pretty much dances to the railway company's tune in terms of access; RM doesn't like to admit it but it's true and in addition railway companies are famously full of themselves/difficult to do business with.

So you have someone like RM charging frightening amounts of money for something there's no iron clad guarantee they can deliver not an uncommon scenario in the tour business and that's why they want a week to make an offer they need to kick this upstairs/figure out who's not responsible yet again-IOW corporate ass covering in overdrive.

First off they got ripped off on their insurance. We travel lots so but our insurance on a yearly basis including cancellation/interruption and it's about $650 for both of us.

As for them getting compensation I believe that would be up to the tour operator as most tickets for carriage include a waiver for unforseen circumstances beyond the carrier's control.

Yeah that's steep-Canadians as a rule are over insured and someone saw these clowns coming I bet it was a travel agent.

Those rail trips are sure expensive. One of the issues has to be their choice of suh a costly vacation. They would likely have buyer's remorse even if they went all the way by rail. This just enhances it.
