Canadians are living increasingly alone and without children, according to the latest census figures released by Statistics Canada.

The number of Canadians living alone increased to its greatest share since Confederation and was the most common type of household in the country in 2016, representing 28.2 per cent of all households in Canada.

That is an increase from 25.7 per cent in 2001. Fully 13.9 per cent of the Canadian adult population now lives alone. That figure stood at just 1.8 per cent in 1951.

According to Statistics Canada, this puts Canada well in line with the United Kingdom and the United States, though countries like France and Germany have more single-person households.

The single-person household is most common in Quebec at 33.3 per cent, while British Columbia and Nova Scotia also have more single-person households than the Canadian average. The lowest rates could be found in Nunavut (18.9 per cent), while less than one-in-four adults in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador were living alone.

Due to its aging population, the biggest increase in single-person households occurred in the Atlantic provinces, with rates of growth two to four times greater than Canada as a whole.

Women are more likely than men to be living alone due to their longer life expectancy. On the bright side, however, the share of senior women living alone has decreased.

"This is the result of an aging population," said Johanne Denis, a director general at Statistics Canada. "We're also seeing higher rates of separation and divorce, delayed couple formation among younger Canadians and more women in the labour force. These are trends that other countries are also experiencing."

The 2016 census found that the rate of growth since 2011 among couples living without children has been greater than among those couples living with children, at 7.2 per cent to 2.3 per cent.

Couples with at least one child represented 51.1 per cent of all couples, their lowest share on record. The biggest decline occurred in Atlantic Canada, with Nova Scotia having the lowest share at 42.8 per cent.

Do you want debt or do you want a family. Get out of the city find some land carve out a house of some sort . Work will set you free. It is a very great shame if you do not have children. I am mid sixtyish and still surrounded by children of all ages every day and it is the greatest joy in my life. I wouldn't trade that for anything. My nephew and his wife and two children under three live with me on the old family farm and there's little people running arround the property every day. Drive shjtty cars wear old cloths grow as much of your own food as you can, stay away from debt and play with babies as much as you can.

Wait till you have to pay for 4 years of college and university..

Its not having the second income that hurts the most. Don't think college with a second income in the house will be any better though.

Missing a 22000$ second income compared to having to pay 10000$ for college or university.

I always felt that procreation is the single most important goal of all life.
But looks like i could be wrong. Money might be the ultimate goal for life in the universe.

Good thing Joe's Corner Coffee-shop is now internet based. Back in the day the old guys had to hoof it down there to keep up on the local gossip. Now you wake up and you are already there

(or you never actually wake up) Insert appropriate sound chip.

The Pinch: How the Baby Boomers Stole Their Children's Future by David Willetts
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2010/feb/07/the-pinch-david-willetts

David Willetts a British politician & thinktank who sees it the same way I have.
Not sure how respected & credible he is.

Actually the article is written by Richard Reeves, and if you read it carefully you will note that that he is somewhat critical of Willetts' positions on a number of issues as well the sources or lack of them that he uses to back up his viewpoint. Frankly, it appears to me that most of Willett's statements are just unsubstantiated whining.

The data needed to prove his theory will only be available in 35 years from now.

He's saying that boomer are getting 118% out of what they payed in taxes.
When other generations get to their older age the same calculations can be done and give proof.

Willetts is from the boomer generation. So its not really whining. More like he's acknowledging that there is something happening.
Exactly what and why will be determined eventually once there is better data and information. But that will happen too late and the crisis will have already happen

So yes. Its out of our control.

And since there is little political will from boomers who have generally dominated political debate, to try and change the situation nothing will be done. Because its just whining to them.

When boomers were younger their whining could not be ignored because of their greatest numbers.

There are about 6 even 7 factors to the situation and to pin all the problems on boomers is unjust.
It is sad that my life will be much better when boomers finally die. But its the truth.

Essentially I wont have a chance at a opportunity until a greater number of boomers have died because im price out of most opportunities. And the majority of us will never know the needed economic success to catch up to prices. Especially if we decide to have kids.

If I remember correctly there have been similar articles casting aspersions on more recent generations. This seems to me to be more of the same.

Yes we know. We understand, You don't give a fuk about anything other then yourself in you're particular situation, and you are doing fine. Congratulations!!!

There could be a mass extinction happening and you wouldn't give a fuk we understand. Thanks for sharing that you dont give a fuk about younger generations and the new struggles they face.

Thank you for also sharing that you absolutely don't want to help them at all in any way possible. Thank you for sharing that you basically dont give a fuk and even if something was happening you don't give a fuk.

Thank you for you're sincerity about not giving a fuk about this obvious problem. Make sure to not support any political party that want to help these young people who want children but will never have the opportunity to have any.

That has to be almost a record post for the amount of stupidity it contains. Why don't you actually try something new - it is called reading? My post contained none of the things you accuse me of. You simply went into your little fantasy world and invented them.
