The controversial weed killer ingredient glyphosate will be added to California's list of potentially cancerous chemicals effective July 7, state officials announced Monday.

Glyphosate is the most widely sold herbicide ingredient in Canada, and it's the key ingredient in Roundup, the most widely used weed killer in the world.

The move makes California the first state to take a step toward requiring Roundup to come with a warning label.

Roundup's maker, Monsanto, vowed to continue its legal fight against the designation, and called the decision "unwarranted on the basis of science and the law."

The seeds and chemicals company has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is "probably carcinogenic" in a controversial ruling in 2015.

The WHO stepped back its position somewhat in 2016, saying glyphosate was "unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans from exposure through the diet."

"This is not the final step in the process, and it has no bearing on the merits of the case. We will continue to aggressively challenge this improper decision," Scott Partridge, Monsanto's vice-president of global strategy, said.

Listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen under California's Proposition 65 would require companies selling the chemical in the state to add warning labels to packaging. Warnings would also be required if glyphosate is being sprayed at levels deemed unsafe by regulators.

Monsanto tried unsuccessfully to block the listing in trial court, arguing that Roundup doesn't cause cancer and that the labels will harm the company's business.

Monsanto and other glyphosate producers would have roughly a year from the listing date to re-label products or remove them from store shelves if further legal challenges are lost.

Health Canada ordered relabelling

Environmental groups cheered OEHHA's move to list the chemical.

"California's decision makes it the national leader in protecting people from cancer-causing pesticides," said Nathan Donley, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity.

Glyphosate has no color or smell. Monsanto introduced it in 1974 as an effective way of killing weeds while leaving crops and plants intact.

It's sold in more than 160 countries, and on 250 types of crops in California. It's also used in landscaping, golf courses, orchards and vineyards. In Canada, glyphosate is sprayed on crops such as canola, soy, field corn and wheat.

According to a report by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency obtained by CBC News, more than 25 million kilograms of glyphosate were sold in Canada in 2014 (the most recent year for which data is available), where it's sprayed on crops such as canola, soy, field corn and wheat.

Earlier this year Health Canada published its re-evaluation on glyphosate, saying the potential risks to human health and the environment from the chemical are acceptable if used as directed, but it also ordered manufacturers to update commercial labels for products containing glyphosate by 2019.

The warning label does what?? The GMO seed-bank is their crown and it is also the most toxic. At least the bees can read the label and know to stay away from that field. When Roundup is sprayed and the crop harvested that material is still there and just as dangerous. It is not just dangerous when being handled.

It is a start though. Have to admit I don't know the stats for the EU but there have been some headlines published that say there is a revolt against Monsanto but it is words alone and no bite so they would just do it under the table. There is nobody to speak up for any of Africa and those fields will mixed and sold globally.

I used their herbicide on a small walk way once when I was working, and my lips went numb for three days.
After that I insisted on my own organic preparation... a big bag of salt.
;)
No more weeds between those rocks.

Brake cleaning fluid in a spray can is the same material they used in the GOM blowout. We used it around the shop a lot and it really could make oil and grease disappear right before your eyes. However spay some on a co-workers steel0toed boots and he would act like you stabbed them with a knife. The tingling toes came after just a few minutes if it got on your boots so it is bad shit, of that there is no doubt. The warring was done in micro print for a very good reason.

Boiling water is what we used on thistles in the hay fields that were for race horses. Along with spraying the plant we has a spike with a hole so the roots could be hit as well.
A history of Du Pont (Rothschild buddy) would show how that was changed from natural methods to harsh chemicals. You guessed right of you think pot was number one on their hit list. (hemp rather than the smoking kind)

Of course there is. Why do you think some reacted the way they did??

Purple GM 'super rice' could reduce your risk of cancer | Daily Mail Online
The purple GM 'super rice' that could reduce your risk of cancer: Scientists use a new genetic engineering technique to create grains that are rich in antioxidants

  • Researchers devised the new GM technique, called TransGene Stacking II
  • The technique expresses eight anthocyanin genes in the seed tissue
  • Anthocyanin has been shown to boost the production of antioxidants
A new genetic engineering technique is being used to create a strain of 'super rice' that could decrease your risk of cancer.
The technique produces rice which has high levels of antioxidant-boosting pigments called anthocyanins.
Experts believe the rice holds the potential for decreasing the risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other chronic disorders.
