Remainer newspaper The New European has been criticised by Skegness locals, including the MP, for a front page which appears to mock the area for voting Brexit.

Using an image which has been accused of "exploiting" local mascot the Jolly Fisherman, the paper appeared to show Skegness in a Brexit apocalypse.

The image depicts the Jolly Fisherman holding two fingers aloft and wears a shirt which says "Go Away" as well as a scarf in Ukip colours.

The front page says: "Skegness is so Brexit".

It offended many, as Lincolnshire recorded the highest vote (75%) for Brexit in Boston, which is a town just 40 minutes away from Skegness.

The front page appeared to be intended to mock and offend the people of the Brexit-voting seaside town, as the front page was emailed out to the media on Wednesday afternoon with accompanying text saying there was an “opportunity to stir up controversy locally” as the cover and article were “unlikely to go down well”.

The Remain-voting local MP, Matt Warman, told BBC Radio Lincolnshire the front page is "not only fundamentally wrong but fundamentally daft".

Skegness Town Council’s clerk Steve Larner told the i newspaper: “It is very sad to see the image of the Jolly Fisherman being exploited in such a negative way.

“Both residents and visitors will testify that Jolly welcomes everyone to Skegness and many will be hurt and offended by this use of their much loved, iconic Jolly Fisherman.”

He also refuted the article accompanying the image, saying the town is“very much open for business”.

“Last weekend the town was exceptionally busy, filled with visitors who used our beautiful beach and received a superbly warm welcome,” he said.

Many on social media expressed their shock at the front page.

One wrote: "That front page may be good business for you, but it is awful, awful politics for the pro-European cause".

Another said: "How to show the way in crass snobbery!"

The Editor of the New European, Matt Kelly, didn't seem to mind the outrage he caused, writing: "This one appears to be causing a bit of a kerfuffle" and "Haha.. another bloke from the Mail doesn't like it. #winning".

The amusing part is that you can simultaneously claim to believe in democracy and call for mass murder of people who vote different from you. You shoulda been born in Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

State execution isn't mass murder. It would be legal.

The Holocaust was the extermination of innocent people, not criminals who had committed treason against the state, like Remoaners.
Precisely. You think voting in a proper, Parliament-called referendum is treason. Saddam Hussein called elections every now and then, and always got more than 99% of the vote. You shoulda been one of his election officials. Though I suppose you're pretty happy living under Koenigin Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

How is sharing a suspicion of the Remoaners any different from the suspicion Americans shared about the Loyalists during the War of Independence?

I'm not sure what the big deal is. A publication cranked out by a group of anti-freedom, anti-democracy communists crying about people exercising their rights and freedoms. Consider the source, have a good laugh about it and use the publication as fire starter.

I'm not sure #winning is the right hashtag, unless he's trying to prove how much he detests freedom, democracy and people exercising their basic civil rights and that his publication is a worthless partisan rag not fit to line birdcages with, then he's definitely "winning". Ein Volk, ein Reich, eh Matt?

Really? Because it sounded more like a remoaner who can't deal with people exercising their basic freedoms. This was not "news", this was a smear job on a town based on the idiotic preconception that anyone who voted Brexit is a racist xenophobe.
Funny how none of them seem to care that Britain was dragged into the EU illegally and against the will of the majority but are all pissed off that Britain is leaving the EU through a democratic process that wasn't even required in the first place.
The simple fact is, Britain could have said "F*ck you" to the EU anytime they wanted and pulled out without a referendum or a vote from the people. The fact they're doing it this way instead demonstrates that the current govt and leaders give more of a damn about the democratic process than Heath did. Sadly, morons like Matt and the rest of the remoaner pillow biters have a problem with that.

Which is an opinion, expressed in the press. These are both things Jack Cade wants to outlaw.

Is it a dumb opinion? Of course. But if we jailed everybody who expressed a dumb opinion, the 3% of the population still free would have a hard time keeping the economy going.

Illegally? I await with bated breath your legal analysis.

Don't get me wrong, I heartily approve of the Brexit. I've supported it from the start.

The simple fact is, Britain could have said "F*ck you" to the EU anytime they wanted and pulled out without a referendum or a vote from the people.
That is correct. However, the politicians didn't want to pull out (politicians like to come inside). So to quiet domestic whimpering, Cameron held the referendum. Which probably belongs in my "Bad Idea" thread. Bad for Cameron, I mean.

The fact they're doing it this way instead demonstrates that the current govt and leaders give more of a damn about the democratic process than Heath did. Sadly, morons like Matt and the rest of the remoaner pillow biters have a problem with that.
And many of the Brexiteers, like Jack Cade up there, have a problem with democracy, free speech, and a free press. Which is just a small part of why I support the Brexit.
