Not to sound like a racist, but the reason Gary, IN is a failed community, it started out white, grew into a upper middle class 50's families coomunity, then the blacks started to move in and the whites moved out further to suburban areas.

Because it trivializes the issues the people are protesting against to sell Pepsi. Advertisers do it all the time, of course. They try to co-opt popular sentiments and associate them with their brand and get people to buy it. Sometimes it's no big deal, like music or sports. Sometimes it's political and can get a little crass.

A lot of people found this offensive or at least inappropriate. But in this case Spaghetti Os wasn't saying the whole thing could have been fixed with a can of pasta. It seems like Pepsi is.

I am thinking that it is brilliant marketing by Pepsi. Make a commercial that the snowflake generation gets upset over. Then apologize and get free publicity on every news program, No doubt a replacement ad was ready to go. No such thing as bad publicity.
