I doubt it. I don't find you "impressive" in any way.

People say that you are the perfect idiot. I say that you are not perfect, but you are doing alright.

In 2011 Harper refused to move out during renovations.. now he will be returning to South Calgary to be an MP in Calgary Heritage.

The renovations were desperately needed on 24 Sussex Drive.
For 10 Million, why don't they just start new? If reno's are needed that bad, it's too old to repair. Rebuild - it will cost less and be better.

Obviously you never worked on a government contract. It is the bureaucraps in charge that needlessly jack up the price with a constant stream of change orders and poor planning. And that is after needless jacking up of the bid price with contract language. You would have to see one to believe it.

You're right. One tends to be more careful when spending your own money.

I'm a angel with the wood. ;)
You know, I've been a woodworker for 40 years or so,,and you remind me of those little piss ants who get involved in the craft for a little while and all of a sudden they are master craftsmen. If you're proficient in what you do, normally you won't feel the necessity to toot your own horn. I'm fairly certain you would be perceived as a hack in most custom shops.

It's an important part of our heritage that goes all the way back to 1950 when the NCC bought it.

It has housed: Louis St. Laurent, Diefenbaker, Pearson, Trudeau, Clark, Mulroney, Chretien, Harper. I'm not sure if Kim Campbell, Turner or Martin were around long enough to live there.
Anyway. Big deal. It has been the official residence for a third of Confederation. It is so-so in the "historic" department and all of the old building grace was ripped out of the place when Canada bought it. It IS NOT some grand old palace that goes back to Sir John A..

The quotes are already in ...multiple ones by every PM that has moved into the heap and IT IS NOT cheaper to gut it and renovate because it has all sorts of basic structural issues. It is not a good building nor an important one. We should have one that can become one. The problem lies in the past when they were too cheap to build a proper leader's residence,in the first place.

If it is not structurally sound then perhaps it should be torn down. Do you happen to know what the structural inadequacies are?

That's always the question and the situation needs to be judged dispassionately.

Possibly a small part of why people decide to spend the money for 'old' instead of 'new' is that they don't want a modern monstrosity-of course careful planning can eliminate that right @ the beginning of the process.

FWIW-I used to work renovating what passes for heritage housing here in Vancouver and most of those places weren't terribly well built-many of the craftsmen of the day were anything but.

Again this is covered in McTeer's book and subsequent interviews she did @ the time.

Possibly question #1 should be is it up to snuff to withstand an earthquake that is likely to strike Ottawa? If not bludgeon it!

As a matter of fact, Ottawa is in an active seismic zone. I have been periodically involved in a part of mall construction and they get the full monty of seismic upgrades in their construction. The last quake that shook the GTA originated up there.

Little quakes but frequent quakes

Earthquakes in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - Most Recent

Eastern Canada is not in the Ring of Fire but that doesn't mean that it is dead.

The Saguenay region gets big ones. There was an estimated 7.5 earthquake in 1663 there that just about wiped out the fledgling New France colony. They built with stone, not logs and most of their buildings fell down, all over New France.
