I remember graduating at the beginning of the 1980's into an economic disaster area with 9-1/2% interest rates. Those just five or ten years older were employed right away into a welcoming work world but it was a hard slog for a Lot of us in the early eighties. I have a lot of sympathy for kids trying to get started today. Trudeau's economic policies created that situation as much as anything else. An Economist, he was not.

I think the interest rate on Canada Savings Bonds in November of 1981 was 19.5%. Next year they came down to 10.5%. Those 2 years I lived on bare bones in University putting every penny of savings I had into those bonds. They rewarded me handsomely when I cashed them in.

The problem with Trudeau is he was highly intelligent but not all that smart. He was a big picture guy. And big picture guys don't want to hear about niggling little details, like, you know, how the hell we were going to pay for the big picture. He basically started the debt, and double digit inflation did most of the rest during Mulroney's time in office.

Mulroney, on the other hand, tripled immigration for political purposes, the results of which we see today.
