My guess is they actually want a quality fourth liner. Someone who will be content in that role. The right wingers Kassian would be up against are Virtanen, Burrows, Hansen and Vrbata. There isn't much room for a guy who shows up occasionally to flash what he might possibly be if he grows up. Prust is a left winger where there is a little more need for shoring up at the bottom of the lineup.
As for Bieksa, as I said earlier this year, when he and Edler were both hurt the young guys came in and played better than them. If not for those guys the Canucks might not have made the playoffs.
If they aren't in playoff contention next March they should do what others do, unload at the trade deadline to stock up on more draft picks. Realistically it is going to be years before they will contend again anyway so just get on with it.
benning has begun to stock up on good young players, some coming along soon, and the ones he chose this
draft. yeah, if they don't make the playoffs, they will end up in a pretty good draft position anyway,
and they could trade away a couple of players, but those no-trade clauses push them into a corner, it will
be good when they are gone, even with bieksa it cornered them so they didn't have many choices at all,
but benning's priority is the young
players and the depth in the organization, and also putting a competitive team on the ice, and yes, it
seems automatic that Vancouver will be near the bottom of the division this year, but I don't like to
jump to that conclusion till I see games, we, here in the canuck world have a tendency to put our team
down all the time, they are just moving thru a change, happens to all teams, isn't cause they are bad,
its just their turn to begin a change, they missed their big chance in 2011, and now they have to start
again and work their way up the ladder. the torterella season stalled them big time, so that lost them
catching up ground, last season was a settling of leftover problems from 'that' season the year before,
and this season it will be 'to see' how many of the young players are ready to make this team and work
their butts off to stay there, maybe a couple hopefully, along with horvat.
the twins will still hold their own and keep the team respectable, along with burrows, hanson and others,
and I think they will have a pretty decent defense, not sure about goalkeeping, that is really the
key.
the media is already starting to feed the public the negativity of the team, as they don't ever see any
blue sky, they find the darkness and jump all over it, and work hard to drag fans down with them, and
they do quite well at that, so it is 'do your best' in spite of the media, as media is another hurdle
to jump over, and many other good teams don't have that problem, Anaheim is a good example, they can
have their problems, figure them out, and the fans are still coming to game in a supporting mood,
and their media don't care, they have basketball and football to think about.
I don't care about winning the cup, that is one team out of the bunch, but I do care about watching a team that can compete, work hard, gets us excited, good fast skaters, make the playoffs, win a round or two,
a team that competes each year, and 'that' isn't very far away at all, but if everyone sits around just
wanting a cup, that's boring to me, I like the meat of the season, which they did quite well at last
season, just too bad they didn't win the round, that was the disappointment.
and next year at this free agent time, benning will have some money to spend.
and don't forget, while canucks are working their way back up, there will be other teams working their
way down, Anaheim, l.a.,san jose aren't all that young any more, they have their work cut out for them
over the next few years to stay on the top end of the league.
