Owning cats linked to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder

Owning a cat as a kid could put you at risk for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder later on because of parasites found in feline feces, new research says.
Previous studies have linked the parasite toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) to the development of mental disorders, and two more research papers published recently provide further evidence.
Researchers from the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam looked at more than 50 studies and found that a person infected with the parasite is nearly twice as likely to develop schizophrenia.
The other study, led by Dr. Robert H. Yolken of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, confirmed the results of a 1982 questionnaire that found half of people who had a cat as a kid were diagnosed with mental illnesses later in life compared to 42% of those who didn't grow up with a cat.
"Cat ownership in childhood has now been reported in three studies to be significantly more common in families in which the child is later diagnosed with schizophrenia or another serious mental illness," the authors said in a press release.
The findings were published in Schizophrenia Research and Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.
T. gondii, which causes the disease toxoplasma, is especially risky for pregnant women and people with weak immune symptoms. The parasite can also be found in undercooked meat and unwashed fruits and vegetables.

well if it's a parasite then killing the parasite through proper medication will also cure the mental disorders.

Well that is good news!

Wow! I can't bend MY neck 180 degrees like that!

Have a jet black one with eyes like Toothless the Dragon.

What a nice cat!
that's awesome that you have a blackie...they have trouble adopting them out which is awful and makes me want a car load of black kitties

my current kitty would be jealous though

We took in a whole litter of five very feral and just barely weaned kittens on behalf of the local Humane society (momma cat was nowhere to be found and therefore likely demised).

Anyway, the house was a circus for several months but we socialized them beautifully and they were given back to the humane society one by one and were immediately adopted out, we kept one ... the runt. This is a very brave and adventuresome cat and, thinking that it was a boy, I knick-named him "Mighty Mouse" 'cause he took no guff. Upon discovering that he was actually a she, the name morphed into "Mini". We were aware that pure black cats are harder to find homes for because ... well, you know. This is really smart and affectionate cat who has already bagged two mice who had no business being where they were. It is very important that your cats be self-actualized. My Druid ancestors would heartily approve, too.

thanks to you for all that you do with the discarded, glad they all got homes, that's fabulous, any rescues KNOW that you saved their arze ( I don't know how they know but they do) and they are always looking for ways to say thanks...Mini, sounds like quite the character...I would have a house full if I could.

last year I said I would socialize kittens if needed for the summer, but never ended up with any...just as well, likely would keep a few and my god they are expensive, but worth the cost

The year before that, we raised a Labrodor Retriever pup for the Guide Dogs people just down the street from us ( the one that Rick Mercer showed on his show) They spend the first year as just plain dogs before they were trained, so there are hundreds of them out being mentored at any given time. Anyway, after having a high energy puppy around the house from a breed that is famous for chewing everything in sight ( chewed up part of my barbeque ...mmmm...tastes like chops!) the kittens were relatively quiet. The pup was trained up, graduated as a seeing eye dog and we hear from them frequently.

I would like to think that it is charitable to do these things but it is a hell of a lot of fun, really.
