I always thought that was just a Catholic tradition and it's not something I recall being strictly adhered to when I was a child. Is it also traditional amongst other Christian faiths?

It is not practiced in my church. We don't even give up anything for Lent. There are more Catholics than anybody else though so most will think of their traditions when thinking of Christianity.
