I guess even you realised you'd look a complete fool comparing the RN to the USN.

Isn't that was everyone else was doing on this thread before I turned up, just because some aircraft carrier happened to sail up the Solent?

The Americans need to realise they aren't the only nation on Earth operating aircraft carriers. The British invented and developed them, including the ramp on the flight deck.

The United States' population is five times that of the United Kingdom. Once the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers are built it would mean that, including HMS Ocean, Britain will have more aircraft carriers per head of population than the United States.

Safer to pick on the Canadians.
And yet it's okay for them to pick on the No2 navy on the planet, one of just two true Blue Water navies on the globe, consisting of the most hi-tech, most powerful warships on the planet, whilst their navy consists of just 14 surface combatants, all of which date back to the 1970s, and four submarines, all of which dates back to the 1980s.

In short, most of the Royal Canadian Navy is 1970s-era. Maybe the Canucks pick on other, more superior navies than their own - i.e. the Royal Navy - to deflect their own naval inadequacies.

And yet there they are, running flank on carrier battle groups as the first line of defense.

And have you noticed how it's a foreign country's carrier battle groups rather than your own?

Here's the Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring - the Type 45 being probably the most hi-tech warship in the world, and certainly the most powerful air defence destroyer - as part USS Carl Vinson's Carrier Strike Group.

I think the Yanks would rather have a British Type 45 - which can shoot down objects the size of cricket balls travelling at three times the speed of sound - alongside their carrier than some 1970s Canadian ship.

The problem is that the Briddish tend to get distracted by dreaming about the days when they counted for something.

I'll take the Canadians, thanks. What they lack in firepower they make up for in brains, balls, and the knowledge that we're in this together. The Briddish have none of those.

The US Navy is magnificent, or which this proud vessel is just a small part. These ships are what keeps the wolves from our door, make no mistake.~ ianr, Kent

Thank god the US are there to help us if required.~ Benby, London

Hate to admit it, but your carriers are totally awesome, maybe we can buy a couple of secondhand ones from you and you can throw the planes in for free?~ TinTin, Oxford

It is marvelous to see a real ship at last instead of the rowing boats that we have,
~ Hermes, Southampton

Obviously someone whose knowledge of the military is about as good as my knowledge of Mongolian.

I'm not poking fun at the Royal Navy. I'm poking fun of you and people like you that view their Navy as some sort of phallic symbol.

You're just jealous that the British have a powerful navy with hi-tech, modern warships, rather than a navy whose entire surface fleet predates 1979.

The funny part of BL's picture of the frigate and the U.S Carrier is that the US Admiral has the Brit ship off the port quarter on picket duty. That is the least wanted position in the fleet as they are there not to protect but to pick up any flyer or sailor that happens to go over the side. The more advanced (and trusted) ships are over the horizon.

And that is the sort of Aircraft Carriers we should be building.~ George, Essex

Americans: "Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision."

British: "Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision."

Americans: "This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course."

British: "No, I say again, you divert YOUR course."

Americans: "THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT'S ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP."

British: "This is a lighthouse. Your call."

The admiral is trusting the Briddish with rescue duty? I hope he's got plenty of body bags onboard.

Reminds me of when we had the USS Lincoln visit Canada.

This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

lol.

You're just jealous that the Brittish....

...I'm hard pressed to think of anything Brittish I'm jealous of. The Brittish invasion did make me a little jealous of Brittish music but then you gave the world The Culture Club and erased that. There's James Bond and Robin Hood but those are just fantasy. Monty Python were good when I was 15 and wasted but I soon out grew them. Give me some time. I might come up with something....oh wait...your weather....nope...not that either....

Somehow I doubt that George from Essex is an expert on naval matters. What makes him think that the new Royal Navy aircraft carriers should be built more like the the American ones? Because, let's face it, the Yanks have been left more awestruck with the capabilities of the new Royal Navy warships, such as the Type 45s - which completely outperformed their new Yank equivalents in recent trials, leaving the Yanks awestruck - than the British are with new Yank warships.

They are actually second call as the helicopter will take first priority. The ship off the port quarter will be in support of the helicopter.

Meet the HMCS Regina. Launched in 1993. She runs with the USS Constellation battle group.

Come to the next SINKX, we could use some Brit ships to toy with.

When it comes to rescue missions, the British usually get the job done with far less casualties and bloodshed than the gung-ho Yanks.

The funniest part of it is that you are relying on a British ship in the first place.

Since the Brits have no fleets any longer you need a place to put what little you have to any sort of use. What better place than the port quarter of a carrier where you can do no harm to yourselves and give you some sense of importance?

The ship off the port quarter has absolutely no freedom of movement and is pretty much stapled to the carrier. They receive all orders from the bridge of the carrier. :)
