Women-only gym hours request divides McGill

A proposal for women-only gym hours at McGill University is causing some soreness in the student body.
Two law students have called on the school’s fitness centre to dedicate a few hours per week to women-only workout time.
Second-year student Soumia Allalou said her religious beliefs exclude her from exercising in the presence of men, but added that all women would benefit from having the option of working out during exclusive hours.

“I’ve seen that there’s a couple of women who have messaged me and expressed that they would like to see women’s hours implemented,” Allalou said. “They feel intimidated using the weight sets section. They’ve either been harassed or they’ve been looked at, watched.”
But many disagree with the proposition. One online petition, titled “We oppose women-only hours at the McGill Fitness Centre,” had attracted at least 600 signatures before the link to the petition went down.
“Women who refuse to use the gym when men are present make a choice that they alone are responsible for,” read the petition. “Their personal choices do not entitle them to special privileges … We value McGill’s co-ed learning environment and the equality of men and women in our society.”
Introducing gender-based hours wouldn’t be unprecedented. The pool in the university’s athletics facility already has women-only hours.
“We’ve had them for almost 10 years now, and it was at the request of a student who came in and wanted to institute those hours in the pool, and we were able to accommodate that,” McGill athletics and recreation assistant director Jill Barker said.
It’s not unheard of at other schools either. The University of Toronto, for example, has one women-only hour per day in their strength and conditioning centre.
The issue has sparked several discussion threads on McGill’s Reddit subsection, with some saying calling the move “gender segregation.”
Allalou, though, doesn’t see women-only hours as an imposition on anyone.
“I think that three to four hours a week, different times, not scheduling it during peak times, is not really an infringement on others’ rights.”

If you want to see a real sh!t storm, ask for men-only hours. I'm sick of being "looked at" by women. Jesus Christ everybody's a frickin victim these days.

I am so tired of women leering at me. I am so tired of their cruel comments that make me reluctant to use the gym. I am so tired of women objectifying me. I want them to treat me as an equal. Actually, I want to be more than equal. I want equality plus special consideration for my own insecurities. In other words I want the right to be inconsistent, but to be treated as if I am consistent. Is that too much to ask?

If women are uncomfortable doing physical exercises in front of men, it's really not too much to ask. The whole world doesn't need to be co-ed.

p.s. Maybe women should retaliate to the sort of ogling that they are subjected to by pointing at and laughing at men "who don't measure up" while they do physically revealing things like gym exercise. You'll see separate exercise periods for the men PDQ!

I would be uncomfortable working out in front of a woman as a not so ripped dude. If I were to eat a rum ham though, I would be pressing 400lbs easy and causing a world wide pantie shortage lol. True Story, I benchpress cars

Anybody who is not a white, Christian, able-bodied, heterosexual male is vulnerable and therefore must be given special, preferential treatment.

Therefore, establishments like gyms solely for members of the female community must always be encouraged. The naked male body can cause offense to many people.

Men only gyms are sexist, racist and Islamophobic.

Just a other proof women are not our equals.

Watching Nicola Sturgeon and Caroline Flint's performance on BBC Question Time the other week is further proof why women should never have been allowed to become politicians, as many of the episode's viewers who were sending their texts in to the BBC Red Button during the show said.

A weight room can be an intimidating place. Especially if Durka is pressing.

I would support the request for a couple of hours, and if I was at the school I would also request the following:

1) A grunt-free period. This includes no yelling or sounding like Durka has dropped Chicago on his throat.
2) No hogging stations while engaged in idle chit chat. Either workout or get the phuck out.
3) Electronic dance music has infested every gym. There needs to be at least two hours per day free from the sounds of phucked up record turntables.

If it is for religious reasons no we have compromised enough for too many
groups. If it is because men and women want their own gym time No not if
it has been a coed student system. There are commercial gyms for that
purpose and that should do

McGill University isn't exactly public property, They have the right to exclude the public entirely, if they feel so inclined. They are more like a commercial gym than a public one.

I calculate yours has caused nausea to all those unfortunate enough to see it.

So everyone could just be rude to each other? Like an all out pointing and laughing atmosphere?

I so doubt you would see separate exercise periods for men under any circumstance.
