USA
So you ALMOST won, but you didn't.

And that medals table is taking TWO sports into account - artistic gymnastics and rhythm gymnastics.

In the artistic gymnastics Canada finished second in the medals table but you still had three times less golds than England.

The USA's population is around five times that of Great Britain yet you won less that twice the number of gold medals than Great Britain. You do the maths.

The stats show that Great Britain performed better in the London 2012 Olympics than the USA did.

When looking at the number of gold medals per million people in the country's population, Great Britain with its 29 golds in total had 0.4600 golds per million people and finished in tenth place.

The USA's 46 golds in total, less than twice that of Great Britain despite having a population five times as large, equates to 0.1466 golds per million people and was in 28th place behind the likes of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

The math is simple... the US kicked your azz in the London Olympics... as usual.

In addition... the US is better than the Anglish in soccer.

Yes England sent over 100 more athletes too.

It's funny how all the excuses that would have been dismissed as nonsense if I had used them had England been behind Canada in these Games are suddenly all being trotted out now.

No one cares about the commonwealth games
Show me the evidence for that, if you have any.

The reality is that 1.5 billion people watched the opening ceremony; two billion are believed to have been watching the Games; and probably around the same will watch tonight's closing ceremony.

and no it isn't comparable to the Winter Olympics.
You're right. The Commonwealth Games are a much bigger and much more popular sporting competition. It's the third-biggest multi-sport event on Earth after the Olympics and the Asian Games.

It's the Winter Olympics which nobody cares about, unless you live in a snowy land like Canada or Scandinavia or Switzerland and you're into all that sliding down slopes on tea trays nonsense.

To try and even put the Winter Olympics - which was merely designed to give countries which are useless at sport unless it's played on ice, like Canada, something to shout about - in the same league as the PROPER Olympics and the Commonwealth Games is laughable.

Stop copying and pasting whole articles, you can link them and anyone who gives a damn will click and read them. Everyone just skips over your garbage for the most part anyways.
I'll do what I like. It's my thread.

The math is simple... the US kicked your azz in the London Olympics... as usual.

46 gold medals out of a population of almost 320 million is feeble.

29 gold medals out of a population of 64 million is much more impressive.

England have beaten New Zealand 4-2 on penalties in PROPER hockey to win bronze after the match finished 3-3 in normal time

Australia have beaten India 4-0 to win gold - their fifth victory in five Commonwealth Games hockey tournaments. There has NEVER been a Commonwealth Games men's hockey final without either Australia or New Zealand in it.

Glasgow 2014: England men beat New Zealand to win hockey bronze

BBC News

Jackson scored the winner having converted two penalty corners during normal time

England's men beat New Zealand on penalties in a thrilling match to win Commonwealth Games hockey bronze.

After falling behind in the first half, England twice took the lead before being pegged back to 3-3.

New Zealand's Blair Hilton and Simon Child failed to beat England keeper George Pinner with penalties, and Ashley Jackson converted the winner.

Australia beat India 4-0 to win gold - their fifth victory in five Commonwealth Games hockey tournaments.

England's men, who lost to Australia in the semi-finals, claimed their first medal since hockey made its Games debut in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

The bronze medal also ends a run of fourth-place finishes at the last Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and the recent World Cup.

"Four years ago, we lost to New Zealand on flick penalties so it's the other way around now," said England captain Barry Middleton.

"We're trying to turn the tide on the English losing on penalties. We've started to do it and the girls have started as well. We've got the ability and skill."

Coach Bobby Crutchley added: "It was a very tough game for both teams. I'm happy the guys got rewarded with a bronze medal this time because we have finished fourth too many times."

Childs had given New Zealand the lead with a strong run and finish and England looked rattled when first Iain Lewers and then Jackson were sin-binned.

The match turned on a dramatic four minutes before the break, when Alastair Brogdon and Jackson gave England the lead before Andy Hayward levelled at 2-2 with a penalty corner.

Jackson's penalty corner prowess put England within sight of victory in the second half, but New Zealand's star man Childs responded to force the shootout.

Goodbye Glasgow 2014. Roll on Gold Coast City 2018:

Glasgow 2014: City set for end of Commonwealth Games

BBC Sport
3 August 2014

Kylie Minogue (top left) and Scottish acts Lulu (bottom right) and Deacon Blue (bottom left) will perform at the closing ceremony at Hampden Park tonight. Kylie's performance will represent the Commonwealth Games' transfer to her native Australia, where it will be held at Gold Coast City near Brisbane in Queensland in 2018

Kylie Minogue, Lulu, Deacon Blue and more than 2,000 performers will bring the curtain down on the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later.

A crowd of 40,000 people will watch the 90-minute closing ceremony begin at 21:00 BST inside Hampden Stadium, with millions more watching on TV.

Organisers say the theme of the show is "All Back To Ours", with a narrative of a "typical night out in Glasgow".

It follows a successful Games for Team Scotland, who have topped 50 medals.

Ceremony artistic director David Zolkwer said the show would reflect a spontaneous "we don't want this moment to end" feel.

He said: "It's going to be an emotional show - a celebration of a job well done, bitter sweet, proud, inclusive, utterly and uniquely Glaswegian but still typically outward looking, generous in spirit and profoundly human. Above all it'll be a great party."

During the ceremony, Glasgow will officially pass on the host city mantle to Australia's Gold Coast for 2018.

Hampden, which hosted the athletics during the Games, will be transformed with more than 160 tonnes of staging, 3,000 props and 454 flags.

Glasgow singer Lulu will be one of the main performers.

During a 50-year career, the Scot has racked up hits with "To Sir with Love", from the film of the same name, the title song to the James Bond film, "The Man with the Golden Gun", the Eurovision Song Contest winning "Boom Bang-a-Bang" and her most famous song, "Shout".

Scottish band Deacon Blue, formed in Glasgow in the 1980s, will also take to the stage.

Boxers Josh Taylor and Charlie Flynn added two more golds to Scotland's tally on the penultimate day of the Games

Australia's hot and sunny Gold Coast is hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games

The closing ceremony will see one of Scotland's most successful bands, with 12 UK top 40 singles and two number one albums, perform to their biggest ever global audience.

Others to feature include Dougie MacLean, who wrote Caledonia, and Glasgow synthpop band Prides.

Organisers also said there would be some surprise acts, but would not confirm if the show will include The Proclaimers, whose I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) has become a Games anthem at the Scottish national stadium.

But perhaps the biggest name to perform on the night will be Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue.

The 46-year-old released her 12th studio album this year and will soon embark on a 33-date UK tour.

Her performance will represent the Games' transfer to her native Australia.

Bowler Alex 'Tattie' Marshall will be the flag bearer for Team Scotland

Glaswegian humour: Glasgow's famous traffic cone-wearing Duke of Wellington statue has special light-up head gear for the closing ceremony

The Opening Ceremony occurred at Celtic Park, but the Closing Ceremony tonight will take place at Hampden Park (above), Scotland's national football stadium, where the athletics events were held

Thousands of ordinary people are also expected to take part, fitting in with a major theme of the opening ceremony on 23 July of giving ordinary people a role in the Games.

Many of those taking part will be Clydesiders, some of the 15,000 volunteers who were drafted in to help athletes and spectators throughout the Games.

And carrying the flag for Team Scotland will be bowler Alex 'Tattie' Marshall, who won golds in the men's pairs and fours at Glasgow 2014, adding to his pairs golds at the 2002 and 2006 Games.

Closing ceremony parties are also being held at the Glasgow Green and Kelvingrove Bandstand live sites.

There will be music and entertainment, before the ceremony at Hampden is shown on the big screens.

The closing ceremony will mark the end of an almost seven-year journey for Glasgow that began on 9 November 2007 when the city was awarded the Games.

When the dust settles on Monday, the focus will begin to turn to what legacy the sporting extravaganza has left behind and whether it was worth the time, effort and huge amount of public money spent.

We must have some athletic skills. We're top of the medals table. Just as London 2012 showed, the English are better than the Canadians at sports that aren't play on snow and ice.

Canada hosted the Olympic Winter games in 2010 and in those games we won more gold medals than any other country. England used to win the odd medal in something, I can't remember in what sport. Nothing too strenuous I'm sure.

Canada hosted the Olympic Winter games in 2010 and in those games we won more gold medals than any other country.

You won more gold medals than any other country only in daft sports played on snow and ice and against mainly other snowy countries who also like knocking things about on ice or sliding down icy slopes on tea trays.

You struggle to get anywhere near the top of the medals table in things like the PROPER Olympics and the Commonwealth Games involving REAL sports when you have to run without the aid of ice skates and have to pedal for miles along roads and tracks instead of merely doing nothing and just sliding down some ice and have to hit balls and shuttlecocks without being able to easily slide them across ice.

The fact that there isn't much ice involved in the Commonwealth Games, so you have to strain yourself physically and use skill rather than just lying down and sliding down an icy hill, means you are struggling to hack it.

England used to win the odd medal in something.
The tally now stands at 58 golds, 58 silvers and 57 bronzes, and 173 medals in total.

We've more more medals of each colour than anyone else.

And these are in proper physical events, rather than just sliding down a hill in a toboggan.

Geraint Thomas has won Wales' fifth gold medal of the Games - not a bad number for a nation of just 3 million - after winning the men's road race in dramatic fashion as he survived a puncture with six kilometres (3.7 miles in real money) to go.

Thomas had broken away earlier on the final lap, and had enough time in hand to change the wheel and resume his victory charge with a 20-second lead.

New Zealand's interestingly-named Jack Bauer took silver and England's Scott Thwaites took bronze.

Thomas will carry the flag for Wales in tonight's Closing Ceremony at Hampden Park.

Glasgow 2014: Geraint Thomas wins gold in men's road race

Wales' Geraint Thomas won the Commonwealth Games road race in dramatic fashion as he survived a puncture with six kilometres to go.

Thomas had broken away earlier on the final lap, and had enough time in hand to change the wheel and resume his victory charge with a 20-second lead.

The 28-year-old then powered clear once more to win in pouring rain in Glasgow.

New Zealand's Jack Bauer edged out Scott Thwaites of England on the line to claim the silver medal.

The Isle of Man's Peter Kennaugh led from the start but was reeled in with 50km of the 168km race to go.

"Winning is unbelievable, I never expected it," Thomas, who also rides for professional outfit Team Sky, told BBC Sport.

"Coming off the Tour De France, I was tired at end of that. I thought it would be a massive challenge to get a result here but the motivation was there.

"I was buzzing to compete for Team Wales. I just got stuck in and it couldn't have got any better. Carrying the flag tonight [in the closing ceremony] will be a massive honour. That is just as good as winning a race and that means a lot to me and my family."

Come on Blackleaf, If you could win at those sports, you would. You just lack the skills. Btw, there is only one Olympics. The International Olympic Comittee has determined that some sports are better played in season. Hard to do in Britain because you don't have much snow....and further, you have no mountains to speak of. Winter sports are very popular in Canada, the USA, Russia, Most of Europe. Maybe you should do a bit of reading.

The Commonwealth Games is the third-largest multi-sport event in the world after the Summer Olympics (what I call the normal, proper Olympics) and the Asian Games.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games saw 4,947 athletes compete in 261 events in 18 sports.

In comparison, the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics saw just 2,873 athletes compete in just 98 events in 7 sports.

Come on Blackleaf, If you could win at those sports, you would. You just lack the skills.

No. We lack the snow and ice and the alpine mountains to ski down.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games sporting events are now over and now we eagerly await the Closing Ceremony three hours from now.

Here's how the top five teams finished.

Here in Canada , hockey alone is bigger than all those events combined.

That's hockey on ice, I'm assuming, not real hockey, which you failed to win a medal in at Glasgow 2014.

If there's one sports star who I don't like and who I think is a bit of a prat it's Usain Bolt, who seems to love himself and the publicity too much.

During the medals ceremony of the men's 4x100m relay, in which Jamaica took gold, England silver and Trinidad & Tobago bronze, Bolt even decided to jump into the England team's medal picture as they stood on the podium.

It's NOT all about you, Usain.

It's a photo-Bolt! Victorious Usain jumps into England team's medal picture as he laps up Commonwealth record win by donning tartan, posing for selfies and working the Glasgow crowd

Usain Bolt helped Jamaica to gold in the men's 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games last night with a record time of 37.58 seconds. He finished in front of England's Daniel Talbot who came in second ahead of Trinidad and Tobago in third place. After crossing the finish line Bolt posed for selfies with fans, high-fived members of the crowd as he completed his lap of honour and then jumped into the medal-winning pose of the England team, who came second,
whilst holding his quaich, a traditional Scottish shallow two-handled drinking cup or bowl which the Scots often use to drink whisky out of, which has been given to each medallist as a gift

Love this.

Scotland's nationalist First Minister Alex Salmond, who is hoping the Scots vote in favour of independence in his 18th September referendum, was mocked on Friday by a St George's Flag waving England fan at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The politician was watching the men's 10m synchronised diving final at the Commonwealth Games - which was actually held in the Scottish capital Edinburgh at the Royal Commonwealth Pool - which saw (shock!! horror!!) England's Tom Daley and James Denny claim silver.

He smiled, gasped and held his hand to his mouth - all the while oblivious to the fan behind him, who gave the camera a knowing smile.

The incident came days after a pro-independence woman was escorted from the swimming arena by police for waving a Scottish flag with the word 'Yes' printed on it.

Rules for spectators prevent banners with 'political messages' and police insisted the Saltire was allowed.

Polls show the 'NO' vote still has a substantial lead in the referendum with just 46 days to go.

These Games have seen the Scots fans get behind not only the Scottish athletes but those from the other Home Nations - Wales, England and Northern Ireland, and also British Crown Dependencies like Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and British Overseas Territories like Falklands, Gibraltar, Bermuda etc - and the same has been true of the other Home Nations' fans.

All this British lovey-dovey must dismay Salmond and his SNP mob.

Something wrong, Alex? Moment Scotland's First Minister is mocked by a fan waving an England flag behind his back at the Commonwealth Games

Salmond infamously unfurled Scots flag in Royal Box behind David Cameron

With just 47 days until Scotland votes on independence, Alex Salmond has been unfurling the Saltire whenever he can.

So a cheeky England fan couldn't resist photobombing the First Minister with the St George's Cross - a year after Salmond pulled a similar stunt at Wimbledon.

The politician was watching the men's 10m synchronised diving final in Edinburgh at the Commonwealth Games, which saw England's Tom Daley and James Denny claim silver.

He smiled, gasped and held his hand to his mouth - all the while oblivious to the fan behind him, who gave the camera a knowing smile.

The incident yesterday came days after a woman was escorted from the swimming arena by police for waving a Scottish flag with the word 'Yes' printed on it.

Rules for spectators prevent banners with 'political messages' and police insisted the Saltire was allowed.

But the rules didn't stop Salmond - who is gearing up for the referendum on September 18 - infamously waving a Saltire behind David Cameron in the Wimbledon Royal Box when Scot Andy Murray claimed victory last year.

Revenge of St George: An England fan cheekily waved the national flag behind Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond's head yesterday at the men's synchronised diving final of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh

Oblivious? The First Minister appeared not to realise the flag was being waved behind him in a final which saw England's Tom Daley and James Denny claim silver medals. Scotland votes on independence on September 18

Tension: The incident came days after a Team Scotland fan was escorted from the swimming arena by police for waving a Saltire with the word 'Yes' on it. Officials said she broke rules which ban political slogans

He's got history! The First Minister famously unfurled the Saltire behind David Cameron at Wimbledon last year

Pride of England: Yesterday's event saw England's Tom Daley and James Denny (pictured) claim silver medals. Daley went on to take gold in the men's 10m platform final last night

Ice hockey is real hockey

Hockey is real hockey. That's why it's known as hockey.

Ice hockey is just a silly game invented by British soldiers in Canada in the early 19th Century who couldn't find a field to play (field) hockey in so ended up playing it on ice instead, because that's all there was.

Do you ever top to wonder just how daft, silly and pointless hockey on ice appears to the rest of the world?

There's more skill involved on the ice. Also many countries around the world play ice hockey so no it doesn't look silly or pointless to the rest of the world. Field hockey on the other hand...

Click here for the entire table with numbers from 62 countries.

Some facts and figures:
  • Of the big hockey countries, the Czech Republic and Finland had the biggest growth. The Finnish player registration numbers went up from 56,626 to 66,636 (plus 17.68%) and the amount of hockey players in the Czech Republic rose from 95,094 to 107,722 (plus 13.28%) making it the third country in the world, and the first European country, to reach six digit registration numbers.
  • Also the numbers in the world’s biggest ice hockey nation went up. Canada has 625,152 registered ice hockey players compared to 617,107 last year. Hockey’s motherland is followed by the United States (510,279).

The fact is, that many more people in the worlld play ice hockey than what is now called "field hockey" with their funny little umbrella handle sticks, Ice Hockey players can reach speeds of close to 30 mph, so the game is much, much, faster.
