If you log on to the Vatican website it clarifies Francis's statement, naming only the Calabrian mafia. There is silence on the Sicilian mafia. Explain why.

You might be right. I'm just a little reserved on the subject. I stopped taking the word of any random Caflick on Catholic law when I found out that Papal infallibility does not mean everything the Pope says or does is automatically and eternally right. Rather, Papal infallibility is a doctrine that must be invoked by the Pope in order to be in effect, and is only in effect with regard to a proclamation for which the Pope has invoked infallibility.

Turns out that your average Caflick on the street may or may not know as much or little about Caflick law as your average citizen on the street may or may not know about the law of her country.

Not surprising when you think about it for more'n three seconds.

Seems to me if you are using words like Catflick, you have several pre-conceived notions which may be getting in the way of seeing things objectively.

Because he wasn't in Sicily? He was speaking to Calabrian's not Sicilians?

He didn't say anything about the american mobsters or the Cartel either.

So, it's not the whole damn mob.

Gerry, do you expect Francis to include the Sicilian mob? Are you lobbying for this inclusion?

Here's what he said

“Those who in their lives have taken this evil road, this road of evil, such as the mobsters, they are not in communion with God, they are excommunicated,”

So the Vatican was fibbing when they said the reference was to the mobsters of the Calabrian mafia?

Mincing words
Pope Francis concluded his one-day trip to the region with strong words against the Calabrian Mafia, the 'Ndrangheta, calling it 'adoration of evil and contempt for the common good.'

No, like I said, he was speaking in Calabria, specifically to the people of Calabria. Like I have already pointed out, he didn't mention american mobsters or the Cartel. Doesn't mean he is giving them a pass. Only a troll would be suggesting otherwise, and I have come to expect this stupidity from the likes of you.

i agree with that statement. But, did Francis "excomunicate" the whole damn mob?

Not that I know of. I thought he had for that clan in particular- You are familiar with them as they run the mafia in Canada and elsewhere after the Rizzutto clan fell.

Now a question- are you giving the man a fair shake?

Okay, I gotta ask, why are you so stuck on that one piece "excommunicate the whole damn mob"?

The only place that's stated is in the thread title, it's not official, it's only how the OP decided to phrase it. I'll point out that no where in the CNN article nor on the Vatican website does it say anything about the Pope "shining up his ginormous brass balls" either.

Well, if the statement is specific to a subgroup of the mob, and not the entire mob as the OP suggests, it is only natural to ask why Francis was so specific and by inference giving the others a pass. Language is everything. I am not being difficult; the question is an honest one.

Now a question- are you giving the man a fair shake?

I assume he thought through his statement; so see above.

OK we will let that pass. Is he making changes that are needed? And also opening up the Church?

Well, first the CNN article is incorrect when it states, "...Pope Francis told Italian Mafia members they are excommunicated..."

Has Francis opened up the Church to women? How many women priests are there?
Has Francis relaxed the discipline of the Latin Rite and allowed priests to marry?
Has Francis relaxed its teaching on birth control?
Etc.

But that's not how it seemed at all, the way you were wielding that one specific phrase was as if you were catching the Pope or the Vatican in a lie. You're demanding an explanation, on behalf of the Pope, for the words that someone else used.

The reason why he was so specific is in the article and has been explained, he was in Calabria and speaking in relation to a recent grisly murder by members of the Calabrian mafia. The inference that it gives others a pass is your own, the implication is simply not there. You are choosing to look at it that way. No different, from my point of view, than if I told you I just gave $100 to the Cancer Society and you pointed out that I didn't give money to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Choosing to focus on what I haven't done and ignoring what it is I have done.

And I'm not being difficult either but neither do I have a horse in this race.

I believe from other posts you mention you are not Catholic and specifically, aithiest. As such, why should any of this matter to you?

Well, over 40% of Canadians are considered Catholic. What affects them, affects us all.

How a religion treats women, for instance, is a worthy topic.

This is a forum, and therefore all viewpoints must be considered, not just those with which you agree.
