Not all pipe carriers are shaman.
And not all shaman are pipe carriers. I happened to spend some time with an old Cree man in the 70s and 80s who was both. I would trust him with my life before any doctor on the planet. He was the most Christ like person I ever met: humble, powerful and full of integrity. He never used any kind of drugs and his healing methods were nothing short of miraculous. By example, he taught me that humility, selflessness and integrity were the secret to great power; spiritual power (not white man's power).

Pastor Andrew Hamblin Would Rather Die Or Go To Jail Than Give Up Handling Snakes

As part of a traditional Appalachian sect, the 22-year-old church leader illegally handled venomous snakes — and starred on the reality TV show Snake Salvation — until wildlife authorities seized them all. Risking his life and his livelihood, he’s taking a stand in the name of Jesus, and, he argues, in the name of religious freedom.
