Around the League in Week 11
Darian Durant got top honors as the Player of the Month – Rock on DD! Darian completed 86 of 129 passes for 1,172 yards and 9 TDs for the month. He currently leads the league with 21 TDs and just 1 measly interception.
Montreal Alouette LB Chip Cox – Defensive Player of the Month with a CFL high of 71 tackles. He is also credited with 1 sack.
And back in the Green and White, Chris Milo was named Special Teams Player of the Month for making all 11 of his FG attempts. Way to go Milo!
Montreal LB Marc-Olivier Brouillette - Top Canadian of Month. Marc-Olivier has a league-leading 3 forced fumbles which led to 2 defensive TDs and has a career-best 4 sacks. Good on ya, Marc.
Really sad news out of Montreal where Jim Popp announced that Anthony Calvillo will be out for 9 weeks with concussion symptoms. Considering that there are only 9 games left in the regular season, this is indeed a blow for both the Als and Anthony. It would be an inglorious end to an illustrious career if Anthony were to end his season this way as chances are he will not be back in Montreal colors next year. All the best to you Anthony, truly hope your team makes it to the play-offs and we get to see you on the field again.
Veteran centre for the BC Lions – Angus Reid will miss his 10th straight game with a back injury. He has three herniated discs in his lower back and one is pressing against his sciatic nerve. ML - Solomon Elimimian has a thigh injury and DB Ryan Phillips – groin both are questionable for the teams 2nd game against the Ti-Cats.
Tanner Marsh will be back behind centre when the Als play their 2nd game against the Argos this week.
Winnipeg signed yet another QB on Wednesday – Levi Brown a 2010 7th round draft pick of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Jason Boltus, Max Hall, and Buck Pierce remain on Winnipeg’s depth chart.
Lots of talk on the forums this week about Edmonton GM Ed Hervey’s remarks/rant to the media. Seems that fans around the league are not happy with the way Hervey handled the situation and I agree with them completely. Can you imagine if Brendan Taman did something like this? Riots would break out in Regina. ;-) Hervey specifically called out Simeon Rottier saying he didn’t care if the latter sat on the bench the rest of the season. Gotta wonder how the locker-room will react to this classless move by their GM.
In the same statement, Hervey guaranteed that Doug Sams was finished calling the plays as OC, yet there was Doug practicing with the team on Wednesday and calling all the shots for QB, Mike Reilly. When asked about why Hervey had announced the change, Sams said ‘I don’t know – you’d have to ask him’ Gotta wonder if anyone on the coaching staff has a clue what is going on? Sheesh. Seems that Winnipeg is not the only team with troubles at the top.
Not to be outdone by his GM, Kavis Reed made headlines of his own when he was fined $2500 for remarks made to the officiating staff following the Eskimos loss to Calgary last week. Would love to know what Kavis said - probably much the same as many fans are saying that the refs need to do a better job of calling penalties - and that's putting it very politely.
Stamp’s receiver Maurice Price was nominated as Gibson’s Offensive Player of Week 10 after he scored 3 TDs for Calgary in their game against the Esks. He had 5 catches for 165 yards in the game.
Charleston Hughes got the nod as Gibsons Defensive Player of the Week – Hughes had 3 of the Stamp’s 7 sacks on the Esk’s Mike Reilly.
Gibson’s Special Teams Player went to Edmonton’s Joe Burnett who had 4 punt returns for 91 yards and a 24-yard kickoff return.
Marc-Olivier Brouillette grabbed Top Canadian honors with 6 tackles, 2 sacks and a key forced fumble that saw Shea Emery return the ball for a 37-yard TD.
TSN Power Rankings for Week 10
Saskatchewan finds itself in top spot for the 2nd week in a row.
Calgary Stampeders stayed at 2nd spot and BC Lions sit in 3rd place.
The Ti-Cats improved their record moving from 5th spot to 4th this week.
Toronto Argonauts are now in 6th position a drop of 2 pts from last week.
The Edmonton Eskimos are in 7th and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 8th.
Bo Levi Mitchell could very well get the call for the Stamps on Friday though Huf would not commit himself saying only that the line-up would be Bo, Drew and then Kevin.
We are midway through the season now and time to look at MOP of the first half. The honors go to Ricky Ray. He just edged out two Rider players DD and Kory due to his spectacular start this season with a 78% completion rate – 10 pts above all other CFL QBs – 15 TDs.
Finally, it appears that Mike Reilly is getting lots of love in Twitterland this week. Players and fans around the league let their fingers do the tapping as they lauded the Eskimo QB. Gotta love that Warrior Spirit. Rock on Michael.
