Christian televangelist Pat Robertson is threatening legal action against a Canadian documentary team over their film alleging that Robertson used a bogus charity as a supply line for his diamond mining business in Africa.

. Right Wing Watch reported Friday that Robertson and the Christian Broadcasting Network are threatening to sue Lara Zizic and David Turner, whose film “Mission Congo” is set to premiere this weekend at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Mission Congo,” according to the Guardian, details how Robertson reportedly used aid money donated to his foreign ministry program Operation Blessing International to provide mining equipment and other services to his diamond-mining operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Robertson also used images of doctors and tents provided by the international medical aid group Médecins sans Frontières (MSF aka “Doctors Without Borders”) to promote Operation Blessing, saying that his group had provided the tents and the doctors and that donor money from his Christian empire was the main source of aid to the war-torn region.

Operation Blessing, says the film, still pulls in hundreds of millions of dollars a year, money that Robertson is using to enrich himself and his family. The film contains damning testimony from former Operation Blessing workers, who say that humanitarian mission flights were routinely diverted hundreds of miles off course to deliver mining equipment and other supplies to Robertson’s diamond mining operation in Kamonia.

Are the self-financing schemes of televangelists even news worthy anymore? I mean, I thought the general consensus was that everyone just took the concept as a given, as in it's a given that "they're getting extremely wealthy off all your donations folks".

Also, why doesn't he just threaten to cut them with his make believe "homo" rings? It would save him on the lawyers fees.

the operative word there is threatening...as in "I hope you don't really have the goods on me" what a disgusting, rotten wicked scam.

His followers will back him when he tells them that "yes we did use the money there, but it was for equipment to employ people, so that they could have jobs and feed their families". And his followers will be okey dokey with it because he is wrapped around their soul and what they have based their life upon.

When people place a cause or belief or political party above logic they must defend them unto death because otherwise they would have to admit the error in their thinking and change their life. I am progressively finding most people do not have the intestinal fortitude to do that and would rather live in their created fantasy. Many people crumble under truth not strengthen.

We often are a sad species.

That's the beauty of religion. Brainwashing people to believe without proof. You can have them do just about anything you want, after that.

I'm counting down to the televised "I have sinned, please forgive me" apology. ;)

ha. He seems to have more pride than the average evangelical preacher. I would be surprised if he went that route. Still if he does Im sure he will be forgiven and re-embraced by his flock.

He shouldn't discount the power of an evangelical confession!

He could probably get Tammy Faye to stand beside him and cry mascara all over the place. I don't think she's doing much these days.

No, no. Not the same dude. Jim and Tammy Faye divorced years ago, I think.

I'm just saying the image of mascara streaked tears has become somewhat iconic, lol. And she's probably bored right now.

Not THE Tammy Faye who god put on this planet to teach women how to apply makeup?

Tamm Faye Messner Last Interview (Very small clip) - YouTube

She be dead.

Ah, well there you go then.

But I was right in a sense, she doesn't much to do right now, lol.

okay I get these greasy guys all confused...

I was impressed with Jim when i saw him interviewed after his prison term...he seemed to have "gotten it" and turned human so I was disappointed for a millisecond.

Okay, onward Christian soldiers and all of that...

As near as I can tell, Pat Robertson's net worth is between $140 million and a billion. He has a huge mansion in Virginia with it's own private airstrip. Not bad for a poor country preacher.

All I can remember is all the freaking makeup.

Or maybe that was Mimi from the Drew Carey Show.
aren't they the same person...kidding, kidding

*dusts off brain*

I think I kind of remember seeing an interview about Tammy when she was dying. I think she had spoken of her makeup representing the masks they were hiding behind while they stole all the money and justified it biblicaly.

I think she turned out to be a regular human being after all living with some multimillionaire who adored her and looked after her as she weakened and died.

Either that or I am living in a fantasy dream of hope.

Well they were always regular human beings. It's just that regular human beings can just as likely be lying, cheating, and greedy as they can be good, decent, and kind. Hopefully they both learned their lesson, if they did they can/will/have die(d) (I'm just covering my bases now ;)) with a clean conscience.

Pat Robertson is not going to sue anyone. His finances couldn't stand the close look they would get if he ever went to court. His mining operations have been involved in shady financing by supposed charities owned by Robertson.

Correct. If he were to sue, he'd have to throw open his books to discovery. And I can't imagine his accountants are smart enough to fool well-trained, motivated forensic accountants. If he sues, it'll mean two things:

1. He really has gone round the twist.

2. He's going down. There'll be as much fraud in those books as in a Wall Street bank.

I fully believe those evangelical powerhouses make Wall Street look like kindergarten kids stealing each others snacks. Plus there's also the immoral element of those who gain their fortune over the judgement of other people's morals too.
