Grizzly bear kills and eats black bear in Banff

It's a "bear-eat-bear" forest in Banff National Park, says a wildlife expert, after a grizzly bear gobbled up a much smaller black bear. They call him Grizzly Bear No. 122, according to CBC News, and in the wild a short drive from Calgary, he's earning a reputation as a fierce predator.

CBC reported last week that officials had closed the Sundance hiking trail after spotting a grizzly bear eating the carcass of an unidentified animal. The trail was reopened this week after the bear finished his meal, a black bear it most likely hunted and killed, Steve Michel, a specialist on human-wildlife conflict, told the National Post.

Michel estimated the Grizzly's weight at 650 to 700 pounds last year, and he said this bear has eaten a black bear in one other confirmed case, according to the National Post.

The black bear that became his dinner probably only weighed about 100 pounds.

He told the CBC cases of bears eating other types of bears might not be too unusual, saying he knew of four other recent cases.

The bear's visit to a trail that's popular among us humans has prompted reminders to be aware of bears, to make noise while in the forest and to stand your ground in the event of an encounter — don't run away.

Look at the claws on that Bear, slice a fell up like swiss cheese.

Bora Griz will wake up from hibernation early , then track down black bear hibernation dens.

Thane den up again later for an 'after lunch lonnnnnnng nap".

Sorta nice to have one of those puppies as a pet, if you lived in the Yukon or something..

At least the pesky neighbors would bother your to often.

I loved that TV program, Grizzly Adams.. as a Yut.

I actually prefer to be around Grizzly's rather than black bears. Grizzles want you to stay out of their way and away form heir food sources. Black bears can stalk you.

GRizzlies died out in Ungava and Labrador, there are ongoing discussions about re- introducing them to reduce the Northern fringe of Black bears.

Nope- just a high tolerance for grease burger....Blacks are porking out right now.:p

Its their natural prey.

Grizzly Bears are natural preditors of Black Bears. They take a good percentage of Black Bear cubs. This was a normal happening.

here's an important point I hadn't thought of:

The sheep rancher said his lambs didn’t have the expected weight at sale time, which he believes was due to stress from the bear.

Yeah who wants to gain weight and be ambling along when that sucker comes a-callin'

The sheep rancher is now building an electrified fence along his property and along the river, with some funding provided by the biosphere group and the Oldman Watershed Council. The six-strand fence cost about $14,000.

That's a lot of money to put out...

True, what we require is a 'buffalo corridor ' between Grizzly and sheep country. A lot fo 'rogue grizzlies' are new boars driven out of their parental range.

I owudl like to see the rogue bears transported to black bear country. Starting with Ungava /Labrador.
