Are forums dying out because of social networking?

To be honest there haven't been that much name calling on this forum of late...
But I wouldn't even want it to completely disappear.

I find the discussions to be rather open and friendly, in the pass few months.
Even between opposing factions.

It's getting a little to friendly even....... Lol

Food fight!!!

Still waiting for proof that forums are dying out.
Anecdotal, however one of the major forum software companies has diversified it's product line so that companies can buy their products without the forum software itself.

Not for me. I still shake my head over stuff like Twitter, which is just a dumbed down form of Majordomo, with a limited message length in order to fit text within the buffer-size of a cell-phone text message, but now I'm kind'a happy that the Gammas and Deltas get to share in the joy of an experience we'd been doing since 1992.

As for facebook... that's Epsilon.

Anyway, the one's to always intrigue me were the Beta's, because I think I'm one (so depressing), so I just saw a movie called "The Last Supper" The Last Supper (1995 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, about what to me seemed like how things could unfold if a bunch of Betas were to get ideas and take initiative.

For years I've been asking software developers to actually create what end users want, not what admin-geeks want to play with. Facebook and Twitter have done that. I can give a lot of examples but don't want to bore everyone.

Bore me. I develope software, and never in a trillion years would it have occured to me to build Facebook and/or Twitter, both of which I don't use because they bore me beyong galaxy's gravity.

You want it? Pay.

Which sort'a drags back to the question of whether-or-not Facebook and Twitter threatens forums.

I guess it basically depends on your IQ.

Did you know (I learned this from my stats prof, which in Canada is normal, but which in the US is idiotically expensive, such that Harper is following the pide-piper of making it as hard in Canada as in the US, in spite of the fact of being Canadian is supposed to mean thing are *not* going to be as crazy nut-grabbing as south of the border) that couples are always within 5 IQ points of each other? She might be crazy, but she's as smart as you.

Friends are always within 7 IQ points, and aquaintences are within 10 IQ points.

Out of reach is when it's more than 20 IQ points. At that point everything breaks down. The US Army did a study back in the 40/50's when intelligence was respected, and they found it was impossible for a seargent to command a platoon comprised of recruits wityh more that 20 IQ point difference.

Nobody was suprised when a dumb seargent could not command smart recruits, but the suprise was when they put a seargent in charge with 20 IQ points smarter than the recruits.

He couldn't command them. Something about their way of dancing around like monkeys he totally didn't get.

That seems to be the problem. Those who develop software want to entertain themselves rather than create what the market end-users want.

*confusion*. Okay, what do you want? You're American, aren't you. Canadian software developers just develop whatever if you pay them.

My experience is: Canadians say, "pay me and I will work", whereas Americans say, "work and I will pay you".

Perhaps because people can insult with impunity.

I guess that seems to be the attraction of forums?? I found a way around that, I think using Facebook.

The reason I created this thread was to see if it's worth while to create a new forum, and it takes a lot of effort and upkeep.

Also, tying the forum into Facebook seems to be a great idea, sorta like an extension of Facebook making it more personal and less anonymity from the members..

So with some of the great ideas presented in this thread, I am embarking on the creation of a new forum for Vancouver, BC.

VancouverForums.net

Thanks for the input.

I wouldn't comment on anything tied to facebook. Facebook is social, and talking politics isn't that social. Linked in is professional. I like to keep them all separate.

Facebook is for Gammas and below.

Forums are for Alphas and Betas.

One thing Huxley never got into was how depressing it can be to be Beta, but still, one should not debase themselves with Facebook.

Have you ever experienced how hard it is to seriously truly shut down a Facebook account?

Those brain-sucks will let you disable it, but to truly shut an account down requires Gnostic knowlege, and it's still probably never really deleted.

Have you ever thought like a spiritual gangster? Ever thought things like, "Okay you sinned spirit, I'll get you out of hell if you can delete me off Facebook"?

Unless you're buying it, Burning Board looks fairly restricted.

ya.....ok.

Ahh, so you have never read Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", published in 1931.

I know a small city in the US where people like you can come together.

You didn't quote anything. Have you ever read Huxley's "Brave New World", or did you get traped in a mine in Thompson Manitoba for awhile?

Wow, you really are an idiot..... I quoted your contention that forums are made up of Alpha and Beta while Facebook is made up of Gama and below..... That was ALL I commented on. Try a remedial english comprehension course, you MIGHT benefit from it. No promises though.
