We have discussed this before - that was when HCR was the top priority.

Republicans can do it now if they wish and nobody is stopping them.

.

Honestly... this is how dumb Obama voters are. Here we have Gopher saying that the GOP can close GITMO.

I just don't know how to respond to this idiocy.

Oh well... this is how the Dems operate now. Say anything... anything at all because the Obamatrons are so stupid they'll believe anything.

Now wait a minute. I thought Obama closed Gitmo.

No it is still open. Another of the long list of broken promises.

We have also discussed this before - Obamacare was priority one in the DNC platform when it got majority support. Too bad Obama allowed it to get watered down thanks to all the lobbying by the Tea Baggers are we would have had real reform just like you have in Canada.

Both Houses of Congress and the Executive Office under complete control of the Democrats when Obamacare passed.

This is all theirs. 100%

And it is failing.

Because even Obama knows that all these guys are scumbag killers.
Scumbag killer? Their country is invaded by foreign forces and they are scumbag killers? If you go to a foreign sovereign nation and start shooting and dropping bombs you can hardly call those shooting back scumbag killers.

Even if they are murderers do we really just toss out the rule of law to suit personal convenience? Like I have said in the past....as long as Gitmo is open and things like rendition and warrantless searches are allowed the terrorists have won. When we ignore the rule of law or stomp on it completely giving up our freedom they win.

Give them a trial and if guilty of rape then life in prision or for serial offenders the death penalty. I am far from a bleeding heart liberal but also don't condone tossing out the rule of law for political purposes or because it might be popular or convenient at that time due to misinformation of the public through MSM.

The Road To Guantanamo - YouTube
The Road To Guantanamo

The Road To Guantanamo is the story of four friends who set off from the Midlands in September 2001 for an innocent wedding and holiday in Pakistan. Two and a half years later, only three of them returned home.

Through their epic journey we hear the story of their misunderstandings, ignorance, confusions and friendships as step by step they go from the safety of their small-town teenage existence to the heart of the "war on terror". Through a series of interviews, dramatised scenes and archive news footage, the film shows how the Tipton Three ended up in Afghanistan hiding with Taliban fighters under fire from US Fighter planes. The boys are eventually rounded up by American forces, only to be kept in horrific conditions at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for over two years

What's stopping him now, Obamacare was pushed through Congress without a majority of the American people's approval and certainly without bipartisan approval.. what's stopping him on Gitmo..

I know, I know.. Blame Bush.

Well, considering Bush opened up and filled Guantanamo, it's kind of frickin obvious, isn't it? Think before you post, Boomer. Think!

All of them? Not so much. I've spoken to US prison guards. A lot of times they didn't even know why people were in Iraqi jails. Fog of war and all that. They keep track of the nasty ones, but some of them probably just flipped off the wrong guy.

Some of them probably arent. But some of them definitely are. They have a few guys there who are known to have been involved with 9/11 and other terrorist attacks from before and after then. Some prisoners have been released from Gitmo after realizing they werent threats - or released them to the authorities of the country they came from. There must be some process in place to decide which is which, its just an extremely slow and weird system. I really dont get why the 9/11 guys like KSM havent been tried and convicted yet. They have more than enough evidence.

Also, does it really matter where they are locked up? Obama never said anything about releasing them after closing Gitmo. It'd in effect just be a transfer of prisoners from one prison to another. Also, given that he is commander in chief of the armed forces why cant he just order the transfer to another military prison?

I do find it a bit odd that Congress seems to think these guys would be a threat if they were moved onto American soil. There were thousands of German POWs on American soil during WW2 and they didnt have any real problem with that.

Yes, Bush opened it.. k. brilliant observation on your part, don't give up your day job.

Obama as part of his election promised to close it.. so back to the question.. what's is stopping him from closing Guantanamo, and keeping his election promises??

You have a couple of points there I can probably answer.

The reason they won't move them to US soil is that once they do they are entitled to legal counsel and would have to be charged with a crime and given a trial. Since they can't place charges against most of these guys they would then have to release them and they sure as heck don't want to do that.

The German POWs were just that. Prisoners of War. The fact that the invasion of Iraq & Afghanistan were illegal under international law and there is no declaration of war means they cannot legally be classified as POWs under the Geneva Conventions leading once again to the US being in a position of having to lay criminal charges and hold a trial.

Yeah, just your anti-Obama reflex was kind of funny there. You sounded shocked: why would anyone blame Bush?

People had more cajones back then. Now it seems everyone is just amped up by CNN/FOX and frightened all the time.

During WWII the American people were higher caliber folks than the weaklings who now try to pass themselves off as Americans.

Yup, we were much stronger than the weaklings today who think of themselves as Americans.

The forum's lunatic right wing delusionals continue to insist that Gitmo remains open because of Obama. If these nitwits would only do their homework they would see it is their pals in Congress who are keeping it open:

Guantanamo Bay To Stay Open As House Blocks Bill To Close Infamous Prison

"The Defense Department should not transfer detainees to Yemen because they represent some of the most dangerous terrorists known in the world," said Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), who sponsored the fresh ban on shipping anyone out of Gitmo.
