Multiculturalism is nothing new in Nor Am. It may have taken some time for the English to adjust in the past but they did. Now the amalgamated cultures of our forefathers and ourselves needs to adjust again.

You would come to understand the Latinos as individuals and as subgroups. You would come to understand their struggles and their failures. You would come to understand why they are not progressing educationally or economically.

You would meet second generation latinos who are very unlike their illegal immigrant parents. The second generation folks don't subscribe to either Mexican or American mainstream culture. Their experiences have made them very hard and cold. They have created a new culture. In my neighborhood it is the dominant culture.

Long Beach!!!

You're preaching to the choir, I drove taxi for 2 years in Long Beach and around Los Angeles.. I have seen lots of bad areas, and you quickly learn how to speak Spanish in that job..

Below cab 129 @ Long Beach Airport..

Multiculturalism has created tribalism in America. Multiculturalism leads to separate identities, group animosity, and perpetual division. That's why so many refuse to accept the kid as an American.
Yeah, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with stupidity or ignorance.

You guys should try living in the barrio. Your views would change overnight. Opinion is always informed by experience.
Perhaps, but everyone has different experiences.

I mean you no personal offense, but you have a one dimensional view of the people who reject the young person as a fellow American.
The kid is from San Antonio. Last I heard, San Antonio was in TX. Calling the kid an illegal Mexican is just foolish and false. Fact is fact whether those numbskulls like it or not.

Yes I agree that all is not always as it would appear. I don't run around yelling racist or decrying others but when I think something is wrong with human behaviour I believe I have to say so.

I didn't take offense personally because of the way you worded it...and also because my age has thickened my skin...lol.

I am merely seeking to understand...he was just a young kid singing the anthem. To me he has as much right as anyone else to sing the Anthem he was invited to sing and may dress as he pleases. No one knows anything about him. What they did was to project upon him their own fears and prejudice. I think that is wrong on many levels regardless of what a human being has experienced he is just another human being unknown to them.

Do the Palestinians on the West Bank like the Israeli settlers? Of course not. It's the same thing here.

Yeah, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with stupidity or ignorance.

It's hatred for the invader. Those being invaded always hate invaders. That's why so many Irish still hate the Orangemen.

Perhaps, but everyone has different experiences.

What does that mean?

San Antonio is no longer part of the USA. It's part of Mexico as far as I'm concerned.

Multiculturalism produces fruit from a poisonous tree.

Sounds to me like lame excuses for being a bigot, any damn fool can be a bigot, it's a little tougher finding empathy, understanding, and even acceptance of others. We can never call ourselves civilized until we do.

"Presidio San Antonio de Béxar was a Spanish fort built near the San Antonio River, located in what is now San Antonio, Texas, USA. It was designed for protection of the mission system and civil settlement in central Texas. It also served to secure Spain's claim to the region from French, English and American aggression." (Wikipedia) The Mexican War of Independence finally threw off the yoke of Spanish suppression in 1821 but it wasn't long until American invaders illegally entered the area and soon outnumbered the weak Mexican frontier force culminating in the Texas War of Independence in 1836. Texas didn't become a State of the U.S. until 1845.

Like the northern Irish, you mean?
So, you are saying this kid invaded San Antonio rather than being a native of it? You are saying that aboriginals invaded North America rather than Europeans?
 oooooookaaaaaaaaaay

What does that mean?
Exactly what it said. Your view of a barrio may be quite different from mine.

San Antonio is no longer part of the USA. It's part of Mexico as far as I'm concerned.
lmao Well, until San Antonio lifts up its skirts and walks across the border, your opinion means sfa.

Multiculturalism produces fruit from a poisonous tree.
I repeat: your view may be quite different from mine, and it is.

Yeah, our views are antithetical to each other. I don't think either of us will learn anything by continuing this discourse.

Very few Latinos can trace their ancestry back to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

You're entitled to your opinion.

It seems to me that ancestry is fact, not opinion...so I'm curious which one of you can actually come up with info to back up their claim.

I am not aware of any reasons why the situation in California would be different than in Texas...except that Texas was independent in 1836 instead of falling in 1848.

The Hispanic population of California in 1970 was less than fifteen percent. Those Hispanics were the descendants of the Californios and were pretty much assimilated. The overwhelming increase in the latino population in California has come since the 1986 Amnesty.

Here's another study for you Karrie: The California Latino Demographic Databook
