Hmmm, they're critically endangered, and their numbers are dwindling fast in the wild, the authorities believe they were going to be pets.

Pets, including domesticated wild ones, have a habit of living longer if properly taken care of. They certainly don't face the same dangers as they would in the wild.

Is the outrage really justified here?
If they were smuggled to be cared for and bred in an isolated group, that could mean saving the entire species but I doubt that was the goal.

So do I.

But as it stands, they would have had a better chance of survival in captivity.

BTW: I am in no way absolving the person of any criminality, just pointing out that the outrage is a tad heavy for something that really isn't all that outrageous.

Not all species are evolutionary successes and could very well be on their way out naturally, relieving competition pressures on the more successful strains.

Can't argue with that.

But wouldn't that nullify his alleged crime?

Schindler made an excellent profit off saving Jews.

I guess that's how he was called.

Does it matter that he was essentially using them as slave labour while he did it?
There will always be good in a bad situation if we seek it.

Does it matter that he profited? I don't know. It has been many years since I saw the movie and I have not read much about him so I can not speak with depth of knowledge nor argue from a point of fact.

From my recollection he used the workers in his factory as a front to save as many Jews as he could. It matters that he saved them, it matters that he meant to save them, it matters that he used a negative and made it positive via choice not accident.

So intent matters for the individual who is performing the action. One can not intend bad, have good happen in spite of and be viewed as the hero.

Essentially what that explores is, do the ends justify the means? Principles and ideals are lofty, and sometimes in the real world they can be unattainable. We can get close but not quite all the way there sometimes. Is using a people as slave labour a good thing? In and of itself, no of course it isn't. Can it be a good thing, or at least have the "evilness" of it (for lack of a better term) diminished by the fact that it was/is the only realistic way in which they can avert an even worse fate? These are the situations that challenge the cold certainty of principles and ideals. The real world examples that show that, despite the nobility of principled stances, sometimes they can actually be to the detriment of humanity.

It's also the type of scenario that proves to me that one should never be quick to rush to judgement.

Yes the outrage is justified for all of the ethic reasons said above.
But he could have affectively prolonged their lives.

He most certainly broke laws, but the emotional outrage, isn't warranted.

So I'll disagree.

There was a Pope who hired as many Jewish staff as possible in Vatican City but was pegged as a Nazi.

But this is all off track.

I'd like a veggie wrap right about now... with some egg in it.

Snapping or painted?

I recommend the snapping.
