new jersey vs new york today, then l.a. vs phoenix sunday at noon

aren't these playoffs fabulous, I know you are 'all' glued to the tv.

very important game for phoenix, they are on the edge, teetering, just another little push.

hope jersey can win these games at home then finish off the rangers in new york.

WOW playoffs, can't get any better than this, um, but I'm going out for the day,

probably tomorrow too, i'll check in for the scores, i'm sure you all will have them posted right?

where are the playoffs freaks, the people who preached playoffs all year, HELLO HELLO out there.

what was it again? regular season means nothing, its all about the playoffs. HELLO HELLO out there.

oh good i'm back before all of you playoff nuts.

anyway, jersey blew it today, I watched the first period, new jersey was all over them, but when I

heard the final score, it was 3-0 for rangers, this game was the one jersey had to win at home, to take

charge, they didn't do that, now rangers are in charge, yuk.

Haven't missed a game so far, talloola, though I am sure now that the Kings have the series with the Yotes all wrapped up especially after that last game. You were right to go with the Kings from the beginning - they are a righteous team for sure.

Still hoping that Joisy can pull it together against the Rangers - they should have had that last game but they let off the pressure when they should have increased it. I know Lundquist is stalwart in the net but they beat him before and they can do it again.

GO, JOISY, GO!

Well, well, well ...................... looks like the Yotes found some of that wiliness they showed back against the Preds. Pretty good first two periods for the Coyotes...................... beating Quick is something to celebrate and to do so twice shows they still have some play left in them.

End of 2nd 2 to zip for Phoenix

yep, phoenix lives to play another day.

As you could probably tell by my previous comments, I had little hope for the Coyotes so wasn't I pleasantly surprised when they were able to shut- out the Kings! Great job by the team and by Mike Smith - who has been a little more vocal than I would like to see but who did stand tall when it was do or die. Look forward to their next game with renewed hope now.

Already programmed tonight's Devils vs Rangers game and am feeling good about another Devil's win against the so-called mighty Rangers - would so dearly love to see Torts having fits behind the bench again. LOL!

GO, DEVILS, GO!

yeah, one of these times they will have to come and put him in a straight jacket and haul him away

to the looney bin, where he will holler and shout at referees and players for the rest of his life.

I hope at the end of this season, that gaborik asks to be traded to a team that suits him much more,

he is a very finness player, but he is expected to play a shot blocking very defensive game, and also

be the top goal scorer. Now I know all players should be defensively responsible, but players like

gaborik and the twins etc., are expected to 'get' the points, so they need to be very offensive when

called upon. The devils are a very good defensive and offensive team, they have been checking the rangers

very closely and hard, but torterella doesn't seem to see that and thinks gaborik and richards should

be able to overcome that tight checking, and score goals, as well as get back to block shots.

He is taking away gaborik's game.

I was disgusted with cherry on coaches corner, (quickly switched it off,) but not before I heard him trashing

gaborik, accused him of sulking on the bench, made fun of him standing up to stretch his legs, and also

accused him of pouting while skating around, and called him a coach killer.

What an ignorant ass.

This is the difference between being good or great. Great players rise to that challenge and do whatever it takes to win. Gaborik is showing that he is good and nothing more. Tortorella is an asshole but I don't think he is wrong to push for greatness from his star players.

Again see above difference between being "good" vs "great".

You know, Cherry is bombastic and overly opinionated at times but thats what he is paid to do. As for him knocking Gaborik about "pouting", he's not the only one. It was mentioned by the Pittsburgh hockey media, and they also made the comments (joining them to the bad post season that Evgeny Malkin had, following what should be an MVP award winning season) that a lot of European players don't handle adversity the same way as we (fans) and coaches want to see. Its not uniquely European (although it is more common among them) and not all Europeans respond in this manner (see Nick Lidstrom for a shining example of one that doesn't) but Gaborik and Malkin join some pretty illustrious ranks with names like Fedorov and Jagr as ones who did disappear, at times, when things got tough, instead of playing through and rising above. The only way this kind of criticism goes away is by playing hard and silencing the criticism, making defensive plays if the offense isn't comming.

Torterella won't ever see gaborik score a goal if he is sitting on the bench,
and gaborik won't play any differently after sitting than he did before.
He is trying to do 'his' thing, but the great defense will stop him most of the
time, and he will skillfully shove one in the net if given a quick pass in front
of the net, or he will send out a quick pass to the front for someone else, but
I see him and richards constantly being snuffed out on the boards over and over.
They don't have any time.
They can't break into the middle toward the net, there is no room, they, like
all the others have to wait for a 'mistake' by the other team, or a rebound.
I have followed gaboriks career since he came into the league at 18 in minnesota, lots of injuries, he played
thru many hardships because of those injuries, and had lots of down time, lots of surgeries, and finally
he was healthy, and while he was healthy in minnesota he showed how good he really was, on a not so good
team, he shone.
The defense is coached so good now days, and that is one part of the game that can be taught, and they
teach them to stop talented offensive scorers, and none of them in the league now can really shine any longer,
as the defense is 'overkill' coached, and they will block shots to the point of broken bones, and do
anything it takes to 'stop' goals, and on top of that the goalkeeping is better than it has ever been
since i've watched the NHL, which was around l953 or so.
It is asking a lot to insist that offensive players find a way to score and be considered 'great', when the
defensive side of the opposition has learned how to stop them almost all of the time.
So many goals now just come from a big turnover, or a deflection, no great players are allowed to dangle
up the ice any more and put on their famous moves, those moves have been nullified by defensive strategies.

Cherry had no reason whatsoever to say gaborik was 'pouting', and if you can see that he was pouting please
explain it to me because I watched those games, and he sat and waited till he was told he could play again,
and if anyone thinks he should have had a cheery bubbly frame of mind, that would be interesting, because
any player who has been sat on the bench because of a mistake, should not be looking happy about it.
They hate to sit out, they 'should' hate sitting out, they want to play, and when they can't it drives
them crazy, whether they are canadian, american, slovakian, russian or whatever, doesn't matter.
The best coach for a player like gaborik was jaque lamaire, a great teacher for the players, he knew what to do to make players play their best, and many players made
a point of mentioning that about him, and in minnesota he didn't have many good
players, so the game was all about defense, but with gaborik he encouraged him to
develope his offensive skills as well.
Gaborik isn't a player who can mix it up very well physically, he waits for opportunities away from the play, but that isn't what torterella wants, he wants grit
grit grit, and gaborik won't please him in that respect, they just shouldn't be on
the same team.

Way to go Joisy! Series now tied 2 a piece! Great 1rst period - two goals and a couple of sniffs at the net by the Rangers but little more from the NY team. The Devils eased off way too much in the 2nd but managed to hold onto their lead. The only goal for the Rangers came around the 14 minute mark in the 3rd but the Devils came back with an empty netter by the star of the game and the heart of the Devils tonight - Zach Parise. Final score 4 to 1!

What keeps me scratching my head is that save for the one PP goal by Parise only 4 minutes into their PP in the 3rd, they are much better suited to playing 5 on 5 hockey. In short, their PP stinks. Marten was solid in the net tonight and stopped a couple that the Rangers should have had.

The game could have done without all the extracurricular activity but I must say that after Rupp punched a completely unprepared Brodeur in the face, I too may well have taken to the ice in retaliation.

Hooray for New Jersey!

yeah, they did let up in the second period, but then rangers weren't just going to go quietly away without
some push back, so they held them off quite nicely, and even when the 3rd period started, they needed a
bit of a kick start, which they did get, then there was no looking back, jersey wanted this one, and
no one was going to take it away from them.

one of these teams needs to win two in a row in this series, so it will have to be jersey in the next
game, I will have my fingers crossed for that to happen.

I know that DeBoer and Torts have no love for each other but that screaming match across the on-ice announcers booth was over-the-top. Peter has to reign in his temper.............. the same might be said for Torts but then that would be asking the impossible.

Nice to see Lundy taken down a peg after all the media attention given to his super-star status...........hope to see more of the same in game 5.

GO, JERSEY, GO!

Coyotes vs Kings.......................game start 6pm PST on Hockey Night in Canada.

GO, COYOTES, GO!

that bit of a screaming match didn't last long, and I was surprised at how quickly torterella backed
off and went back to a more normal frame of mind.
I've witnessed some rather interesting blow ups between coaches over the years, and there is probably
a site somewhere where you can see them, quite humurous when reviewed.

it wasn't long ago that the guy who coached calgary for a while, (forget his name), had a hissy fit,
on the bench, I think it was a reaction to officiating. But he began to disrobe, took of his tie then
his shirt and was ranting and raving, until his own people had to calm him down. He is now the
assistant in phoenix.

At least it provided some entertainment for the guys in the announcers booth - they had to turn off their mikes apparently so as not to broadcast some 'colorful' language as the Bleacher Report put it.

I actually saw a replay of that on one of TSN highlight series............. what a hoot.

well I am glad its over, now I can settle down and wait for the finals, at least in the west.

still have to find a way to get rangers out of the playoffs, I'll think of something. lol

this game tonight was back and forth all night, but I do think l.a. at the end was the stronger

team, more shots, and phoenix was on their heels quite a bit, it was only a matter of time, as

phoenix wasn't going to win four games straight.

I wasn't sure about the so called non call, but after seeing it again, it was knee on knee, but I

didn't see any intent by brown.

Of course the crowd will not see it that way, but i'm sure after doan and his team watch it again

they will see, no intent, but it is too bad there is an injury, because those types of collisions

are dangerous, it seems everyone was just trying to avoid everyone else.

Dowdy got himself pretty riled up a couple of times, and both times I agreed with him, and I was just

hoping he wouldn't get himself into more penalty trouble. I see a much different dowdy since darryl sutter

came to the team, he has matured, stopped all of the arrogant stuff, focuses much better now, and has become

a real leader on the kings.

I thought mitchell had an amazing playoffs, I think this is the best I have ever seen him play, and good for

him that he now has a chance to play for the cup.

Phoenix will come back next year a much stronger team as a result of this playoff

run, and will do better in the regular season, as they came into this playoff not

looking particularly strong, it was smith who did everything for them, but as time

went on the rest of the team began to 'get it', and became playoff tough.

This could turn out to be the second year in a row the Canucks are defeated by the Stanley Cup winner...................not a bad record!
