I'm thinking of using this shot on the cover of my new book.

Night Shots

This is where I run into trouble. Notice how washed out the moon is.

Mark, to capture the moon correctly, try underexposing the shot by a stop or two. Your camera is basing its exposure on an average of the scene so it's obviously going to over expose the moon.

At the risk of sounding like a dufus. Do you mean the F setting?

The Aperture. For example F 4 F 5.6 F 7 etc etc

F-number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, what you need to do is under expose the photo a bit.

I would suggest putting the camera in AV mode (Aperture priority), set it to F 4. Then compose you shot, once it beeps ( focussed) look in the viewfinder. You should see a horizontal scale, no turn the dial on the top of you camera until it's -1 or -2, you'll have to experiment. That should give you enough underexposure to capture some of the details of the moon.

Must be something that takes an knack or an eye for. My wife takes good pics. All mine are work related and mostly taken to document projects.

For me it's about 99% luck.

Two more night exposures.

This photo is a two minute exposure where my son stepped out for a smoke. Bloody smokers.

The second is a shot of the neighbors balcony.

Couple shots I took recently.

Took this one a few days ago while walking the Bruce Trail.

I went back and took this one last night.
