Fewer staff and more ads for the CBC as broadcaster slashes budget

OTTAWA - There will be fewer staff and more ads for CBC as the broadcaster seeks to cut millions in spending following last week's federal budget.

CBC President Hubert Lacroix says the corporation expects to lay off more than 650 people over the next three years as part of an effort to save $115 million.

But Lacroix says the financial pressure doesn't just come from cuts to the taxpayer-funded portion of the budget and in reality, the CBC faces a $200 million shortfall.

He says some money will be made up through advertising and the CBC has applied for permission to run ads on CBC Radio 2 and Espace musique.

To cut costs, the broadcaster will seek to get rid of pricey real estate, scale back its international radio arm and cut back on news, music and sports programming.

But Lacroix says the network remains committed to its long-term plan of becoming more Canadian, regional and digital, which he says is vital to CBC's role as the public broadcaster.

The Algonquin nation could only dream of getting the same funding for broadcasting as English Canadians and French Candians do via the CBC even after the cuts.

They could also dream of the revenue they deserve as well.

CBC has been doing quite well since 2003.

So it doesn't need funding then, does it.

To have a corwn corporation operate for profit defeats its purpose, considering that the private sector deos the same anyway. I'd think the purpose of a crown corporation is to serve a valuable social purpose that cannot be carried out in the private sector due to lack of any possibility of making a profit. So the fact that the CBC can make a profit defeats its purpose as a crown corporation.

CBCNorth has news and programming in Cree, Dene, Inuktitut and an app for Algonquin and soon to be added Tlicho.

CBC/SRC are not necessary when we consider all the private sector options available in French and English.

CBCNorth has news and programming in Cree, Dene, Inuktitut and an app for Algonquin and soon to be added Tlicho.

OK, now that is something worth funding. Perhaps we could separate CBC North from the rest of CBC/SRC, fund the regular one at 0% and let it sink or swim on its own, while funding CBC North 100% on the grounds that it does offer a service which genuinely would be difficult to provide in the private sector.

The "private sector" gets tax credits to the tune of up to 60%. If CBC takes a hit so should the "private sector".

Cut that tax credit and let them sink or swim on their own.

And maybe lower taxes to compensate. I'm all for scrapping corporate taxes once the debt is paid off, but certainly not subsidize a non-essential service like broadcasting.

Agreed.

While I'm not a fan of funding minority media except in special circumstances (such as in Canada's indigenous languages owing to a genuine threat of extinction caused by past tyranny), it's certainly not fair to, let's say, to Celtic media if it receives no funding while English and French language media is being subsidized through the yinyang.

By the way, this unfair competition applies to Canada's indigenous media too. If English and French media, already majorly advantaged on the free market, is being so subsidized, how the hell can Cree media even come close to surviving? In that case, the subsidies to CBC/SRC and tax breaks for English and French media merely undermine any chance Cree media might have.

Less artsy more fartsy.

No wonder indigenous media barely stands a chance.

We have province wide Native radio although they don't play nothing but AC/DC like Brockett 99.

Maybe they can go back to these overnight favorites. Stop with the self-entitled moaning and groaning.

Waste of money. ESL courses for those that can't speak English would be a better use of taxpayers dollars.
