Premier Dalton McGuinty is urging Ontarians to tune out “political chatter” about rivals defeating his government over its budget, but appears to be taking no chances.

He appeared at a campaign-style event in a North York home wearing a “Forward Together” jacket from last fall’s vote that reduced his Liberals to a minority government and bought a “wrap” ad in Wednesday morning’s Metro commuter newspaper to defend his budget plan.

“I just don’t think a lot of families are focused on that,” McGuinty said of Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak’s vow to vote against the budget, which seeks a public sector wage freeze and cuts costs in hopes of eliminating the deficit by 2018.

As for the jacket, the premier said, referring to his wife: “It’s the one Terri insisted I wear.”
New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath said she’s not happy the budget hasn’t done more to help families but is reserving judgment until she consults with the public.

The New Democrats on Wednesday morning launched a phone line for budget consultation at 1-855-ONT-BDGT (668-2348) to determine whether Ontarians want them to force an election. Horwath said people can also share their views at www.ondpcaucus.com/yoursay/.

She said it could be “a couple of weeks” before the NDP decides whether it will prop up the Liberals by voting in favour of the budget.
“The government hangs in the balance,” warned Horwath.

McGuinty encouraged the opposition parties to “avoid brinkmanship and be reflective” in the upcoming budget debate, apparently overlooking the fact he made a sabre-rattling speech to a partisan Liberal crowd last week, vowing he’ll fight an election on the budget if necessary.

Standing in the backyard of a North York family whose huge home is on a small ravine, McGuinty noted Conservatives should be pleased with the proposed public sector wage freeze while the NDP got its wish with a freeze to corporate tax cut plans.
“I would be proud to campaign on our budget and our five-year plan,” said McGuinty, adding he remains “very hopeful” it won’t come to that.

All three parties remain millions of dollars in debt from the October vote.
If the government falls over its austerity budget, the earliest election date would come in late May.

I phoned up the phone number and told them to accept the budget just because I am tired of another election and it would cost a lot of money.

NDP should just play kingmaker and roll with it considering the circumstances.

I have to say, as much hate as McGuinty gets, at least he's open to discussion.

Open to ideas on improving budget, McGuinty says

TORONTO — Dalton McGuinty says the provincial Liberals, leaders of a minority government, will listen to budget ideas from his political opponents in a bid to stave off a snap election.

“I’ve made it clear to both opposition leaders we are open to any additional ideas with respect to how we might improve the budget,” McGuinty said at a news conference in suburban Toronto Wednesday morning.

Let me ask and get it straight, do people want the implementation of this budget?
Are people going to accept it because they don't want an election, is that the real
reason?
I think when you look at a much bigger view has to be explored. If people are in
fact willing to accept it because in view of the circumstances its the best that can
be done that is fine. If the only reason they accept it is because they are tired of
elections, then they should be examining how important democracy is.
This budget is going to touch every family and household, it will effect business
decisions and whether people move to new job growth areas meaning local job
talents will be lost in that region. That kind of money chopped in a short time could
be a good decision or a disaster that won't be overcome for a generation. I think the
people of Ontario have to put a lot more thought into this it is a watershed moment
for those who live there. This on top of a huge slash in Federal budgets and it could
mean a lot of transfer payments heading for that Province.
I would like to see the Provinces get together first, and then the Feds in cooperation
come to some conclusions about how we might realign society economically. This
is much bigger than a single Province or one Federal Government. Getting our fiscal
house in order is going to take all regions and all segments of society its time for a
national discussion without the partisan rhetoric we are used to.

Recessional budgets suck at the best of times. I think he did it with as much heart as he dared yet still make cuts.

That seems to be the case.

Maybe the opposition will try to work with the government, maybe not.

Ontarians should have ruled out/ignored/exiled/jailed Dalton McGuinty long before he entered politics.

He and his mutant bastard political offspring Wynn have done more damage to Ontario than any vandal barbarians could have ever done.
